Begonia ‘Martin’s Mystery’ was introduced from the Bicol region of the Philippines in 1985 by Martin Johnson and first circulated under U192 while its identity was unresolved.

Bicol has a warm, rain-rich tropical climate shaped by monsoon weather and high atmospheric moisture. The plant’s precise collection habitat was not recorded.

Light

A practical home position for Begonia U192 ‘Martin’s Mystery’ is near a bright north or east window, or under a measured grow light in a ventilated cabinet where no direct sun reaches the leaves. Acclimate it gradually, since sudden intense exposure means the enclosed leaves heat rapidly, bleach and develop dry translucent patches. Move it closer to the window if growth stalls, petioles or stems reach weakly towards the light and each new leaf is smaller. Light affects growth quality as well as appearance. Natural leaf pigments produce the pink and silver colouring across the patterned blades. Growth made in dim light is less distinct, but hot direct sun fades or scars the coloured tissue.
