How horticulture produced ‘Moonwalk’

‘Moonwalk’ is a distinct Rex Cultorum clone identified by broad muted-green blades and dark midrib and clear primary veins. The wider lineage begins with Begonia rex from humid rock faces, cave margins and shaded valleys in the eastern Himalaya, forming the principal wild background of the group.

Later breeders crossed that lineage with tropical rhizomatous begonias from additional regions, then selected seedlings that retained dark midrib and clear primary veins. ‘Moonwalk’ exists only in cultivation and is propagated vegetatively to preserve dark midrib and clear primary veins and its established growth habit.

Growing Begonia ‘Moonwalk’ (Rex Cultorum Group) indoors

Light

For usable indoor light, stand Begonia ‘Moonwalk’ (Rex Cultorum Group) at an east window. A south or west window also works from 0.5–1.5 m back, provided hot sun does not reach the leaves. Too much unfiltered light is visible when metallic and pale zones bleach first, followed by dry brown margins. With too little usable light, the petioles elongate, the crown leans and new leaves are smaller with flatter colour contrast. Aim for healthy compact growth; stronger light does not create inherited colour. The plant naturally carries the cool metallic pattern across the asymmetrical blades. The details are inherited: a well-lit position supports clear new growth, whereas harsh sun only bleaches or scars it.

Watering

Lift the pot and test the mix. Water Begonia ‘Moonwalk’ (Rex Cultorum Group) when roughly the upper 2–3 cm has dried and the lower shallow root zone still holds a trace of moisture. Soak the substrate evenly, let it drain fully and never leave the inner pot standing in water. A short surface dry phase is acceptable. Letting the whole shallow root zone dry can cost roots and leaves. Constantly wet mix excludes air from the roots beneath the rhizome. Test the mix beneath the newest petioles of ‘Moonwalk’. The bare rim can dry much sooner than the root mat. A warm, well-lit plant in a close-fitting pot needs water sooner than one in cool, weak light.

Substrate and roots

When repotting Begonia ‘Moonwalk’ (Rex Cultorum Group), take care not to damage a surface-running rhizome supported by a fine, shallow root network. Aim for a springy mix of peat-free substrate, small bark and fine pumice or perlite. Keep the particle size small enough for even root contact while retaining open pores for drainage. Choose a low drainage pot that follows the rhizome's spread without adding a deep wet layer. Leave the rhizome of ‘Moonwalk’ uncovered, especially around the active growing end.

Temperature

Maintain Begonia ‘Moonwalk’ (Rex Cultorum Group) at about 18–26 °C and avoid sustained exposure below 13 °C. Winter ventilation should not blow across damp roots or soft new leaves. Keep it outside the direct stream of a radiator, fan heater or strong cooling vent.

Humidity and airflow

At home, household humidity can be enough. Raise it towards 55–70% only if new leaves repeatedly open with crisp edges. Protect ‘Moonwalk’ from sudden moves between dry heated air and a humid growing area. Keep humid air moving gently so leaf bases and stem tissue can dry.

Fertilising

Use a balanced complete fertiliser at quarter strength every four to six weeks for Begonia ‘Moonwalk’ (Rex Cultorum Group) while it is producing new leaves or stems. A plant that is still unfolding leaves in winter still uses nutrients, while an inactive one does not. Strong feed cannot correct poor light and instead leaves damaging fertiliser salts in the shallow root zone. Feed ‘Moonwalk’ for steady leaf production. Excess fertiliser produces soft, weak growth.

Repotting

Do not repot Begonia ‘Moonwalk’ (Rex Cultorum Group) by the calendar. Wait until the rhizome reaches or circles the rim, roots fill the shallow pot, watering becomes uneven or the mix loses its open structure. A pot 2–3 cm wider is normally enough for the next stage of growth. Loosen only collapsed outer mix and keep the shallow roots attached to the living rhizome. Work while the plant is actively growing in stable warmth so new roots can resume quickly. Set ‘Moonwalk’ at the same depth, with clear surface space in front of its active rhizome tip.

Support, pruning, handling and leaf care

Use a shallow, wide pot to manage the mature spread of Begonia ‘Moonwalk’ (Rex Cultorum Group). Vertical support is unnecessary. Point the active rhizome end towards bare mix and keep roots, a bud and a healthy leaf on any division. Turn the pot gradually over several weeks so fresh growth can adjust without twisting. Clean mature Begonia ‘Moonwalk’ foliage with a barely damp soft cloth while supporting each asymmetrical blade. Wait until a new leaf has firmed before moving or touching it. Cut fully spent leaves or flower stems cleanly at the base. Tearing can injure the crown.

Cool green foliage looks faded

Moonwalk naturally has muted, cool green leaves. A firm leaf with a clear dark midrib has its normal colour. Review the roots or exposure when colour loss is paired with bleaching, limp stalks or successively smaller growth.

Dark venation looks like damage

The strong midrib and veins form a regular pattern across the blade. Mark the edge of a doubtful area and feel the tissue. Normal colour stays firm and stable; damage becomes irregular, papery or glassy and may cross the vein network.

Gently serrated edges turn crisp

Moonwalk should keep a quiet, fine-toothed outline around its cool green field. Redirect hot airflow if only the teeth nearest a heater dry. If every edge crisps and the pot feels light, water thoroughly and let it drain. The next leaf should open without the same crisp edge.

Undersized leaves in the compact clump

A tiny active bud can be easy to miss among the muted foliage. If successive blades remain small, slide out the root ball and look for compacted mix or damaged fine roots. Keep any replacement pot close to the live roots and wait for firm growth before feeding.

If a cat or dog reaches ‘Moonwalk’

‘Moonwalk’, including its broad muted-green blades, contains soluble calcium oxalates and is toxic to cats and dogs. A pet that chews the leaves or a stem may drool or vomit; root pieces carry the highest concentration of soluble oxalates. Keep the pot beyond a pet’s reach. Collect removed leaves and block access to exposed roots or crown pieces during repotting. Recheck access after moving furniture or placing the pot on a lower surface. If drooling, vomiting or swallowing follows contact with the leaves or a stem, contact a veterinarian. Bag discarded roots, spent substrate and cuttings after repotting, then wash hands.

The gliding dance step ‘Moonwalk’

The moonwalk is the dance illusion in which a performer appears to glide backwards while stepping forwards. Its name suggests smooth motion across the patterned leaf.

Botanically, ‘Moonwalk’ is placed in the Rex Cultorum Group. These are selected foliage hybrids with complex ancestry, linked historically to Begonia rex but not identical with that species.
