The cultivated origin of ‘Merengue’

Begonia ‘Merengue’ (Rex Cultorum Group) is a named clone in the Rex Cultorum Group recognised in cultivation by pale silver-green blades and fine pink lines. The group’s principal wild ancestor is Begonia rex, a species of shaded, humid rocky habitats in the eastern Himalaya and is the principal wild ancestor of the group.

Tropical rhizomatous begonias from beyond the Himalayan range entered later crosses and broadened the leaf forms available to breeders, including pale silver-green blades. ‘Merengue’ exists only in cultivation, and clonal propagation preserves pale silver-green blades from one plant generation to the next.

Light

Keep Begonia ‘Merengue’ (Rex Cultorum Group) at an east window. A south or west window also works from 0.5–1.5 m back, provided hot sun does not reach the leaves. A little early-morning light is tolerated after acclimation. Direct midday and afternoon rays scorch the thin patterned blades. A position several metres from a window is too dark when the petioles elongate, the crown leans and new leaves are smaller with flatter colour contrast. Healthy new leaves naturally develop the pink shading over the light-green foliage. Give enough light for firm growth without using direct sun to force a deeper shade. Move the plant towards stronger light in small stages.

Watering

Check Begonia ‘Merengue’ (Rex Cultorum Group) below the surface and water when roughly the upper 2–3 cm has dried and the lower shallow root zone still holds a trace of moisture. Water from several points across the surface, continue to runoff and discard the collected water. A cool, saturated pot is especially unsafe for the fine root mat. Do not rely on the rhizome as a water store. Prolonged dryness damages the roots beneath it. Check below the active rhizome end on ‘Merengue’ as well as at the drier outer edge of the wide pot. Light, temperature, leaf area, pot size and pot material all change how quickly the mix dries.

Substrate and roots

Begonia ‘Merengue’ (Rex Cultorum Group) depends on a shallow root mat directly below a creeping rhizome. Choose a loose Begonia mix with a fine moisture-holding base, small bark and pumice or perlite. Old compressed mix traps water under the rhizome. Very coarse bark cannot hold even moisture around fine roots. A broad pot only slightly wider than the roots suits the sideways growth better than extra depth. Do not mound substrate over ‘Merengue’. The sideways rhizome should rest above the shallow root zone.

Temperature

Begonia ‘Merengue’ (Rex Cultorum Group) grows reliably at 18–26 °C. Protect it below about 13 °C. A cold sill can chill the shallow roots before the room thermometer shows a problem. Hot dry airflow damages soft growth and makes the upper mix dry faster than the roots below.

Humidity and airflow

For Begonia ‘Merengue’ (Rex Cultorum Group), aim for moderate, steady humidity in a ventilated enclosure with dry leaf surfaces. Around 55–70% suits most active growth. Air moisture around ‘Merengue’ should remain stable without condensation collecting on the rhizome. A quiet fan outside an enclosure or normal room circulation is enough. The leaves should not flutter constantly.

Fertilising

During active growth, give Begonia ‘Merengue’ (Rex Cultorum Group) a balanced complete fertiliser at quarter strength every four to six weeks. Continue lightly at any time of year if growth remains steady. Pause when cool conditions stop it. If leaf growth slows while salts collect at the pot rim, flush first and resume at a weaker concentration. Do not use extra fertiliser to deepen the colour of ‘Merengue’. Adequate light and healthy new growth show the pattern best.

Repotting

Begonia ‘Merengue’ (Rex Cultorum Group) needs a new pot once the rhizome reaches or circles the rim, roots fill the shallow pot, watering becomes uneven or the mix loses its open structure. The next pot should be roughly 2–3 cm wider and retain the same basic shape. Loosen only collapsed outer mix and keep the shallow roots attached to the living rhizome. Choose a period when roots and leaves are growing, and avoid severe root work in a cold, wet room. Angle the creeping rhizome of ‘Merengue’ away from the rim without covering it in fresh mix.

Support, pruning, handling and leaf care

Begonia ‘Merengue’ (Rex Cultorum Group) needs horizontal room across the substrate; staking is unnecessary. Control a crowded plant by dividing a rooted rhizome section that carries a live bud and healthy leaf. If one side faces the window, rotate by small steps only after the newest leaf has hardened. The light ruffled leaves of Begonia ‘Merengue’ bruise easily where they overlap. Separate them only after they harden and use a dry soft brush for dust ; avoid rubbing the surface. Prune dead tissue back to a healthy base, taking care not to nick the next bud or leaf.

Pale silver-green leaves look washed out

The light ground colour is normal for Begonia ‘Merengue’. Healthy leaves remain firm and carry fine pink lines along the veins and margins. A papery bleached patch or progressively smaller growth indicates a separate light or root problem.

Fine pink lines are mistaken for damage

The pink pattern follows the vein network and outer edge in regular lines. Feeding scars are irregular and may be accompanied by black specks or distorted new leaves. Compare several blades before treating the normal markings.

Browning leaf margins

Merengue’s pale outer line can crisp after the root ball dries, salt collects on the mix or hot air reaches the leaves. Feel the mix, make sure water drains freely and look for a pale crust on the surface. Remove soft brown tissue that moves inward or develops grey growth.

Hard and undersized new leaves

Repeated small rigid leaves can follow mites, thrips or declining roots. Inspect the newest growth and then the shallow root system. Treat the cause before feeding. A healthy new leaf should feel supple and continue expanding.

Why ‘Merengue’ belongs out of pets’ reach

‘Merengue’, including its pale silver-green blades, contains soluble calcium oxalates and is toxic to cats and dogs. A pet that chews the leaves or a stem may drool or vomit; roots and other buried tissues contain the greatest concentration. Keep the pot beyond a pet’s reach. Collect removed leaves and block access to exposed roots or crown pieces during repotting. Recheck access after moving furniture or placing the pot on a lower surface. If drooling, vomiting or swallowing follows contact with the leaves or a stem, contact a veterinarian. Bag discarded roots, spent substrate and cuttings after repotting, then wash hands.
