The cultivated origin of ‘Lambada’

Begonia ‘Lambada’ (Rex Cultorum Group) is a named clone in the Rex Cultorum Group recognised in cultivation by pink-flushed leaves. The group’s principal wild ancestor is Begonia rex, a species of shaded, humid rocky habitats in the eastern Himalaya and is the principal wild ancestor of the group.

Tropical rhizomatous begonias from beyond the Himalayan range entered later crosses and broadened the leaf forms available to breeders, including pink-flushed leaves. ‘Lambada’ exists only in cultivation, and clonal propagation preserves pink-flushed leaves from one plant generation to the next.

How to keep Begonia ‘Lambada’ (Rex Cultorum Group) healthy

Light

Give Begonia ‘Lambada’ (Rex Cultorum Group) a position at an east window. A south or west window also works from 0.5–1.5 m back, provided hot sun does not reach the leaves. The light is too strong if it heats the leaves and metallic and pale zones bleach first, followed by dry brown margins. With too little usable light, the petioles elongate, the crown leans and new leaves are smaller with flatter colour contrast. Use the newest mature leaf as the light check. The plant develops the deep-red colour across the wavy foliage as part of its natural pigmentation. Low light can make the colour less distinct, while harsh sun bleaches or burns it.

Watering

Begonia ‘Lambada’ (Rex Cultorum Group) is ready for water when roughly the upper 2–3 cm has dried and the lower shallow root zone still holds a trace of moisture. Soak the substrate evenly, let it drain fully and never leave the inner pot standing in water. A continuously damp shallow pot is riskier than a brief dry surface because the feeder roots need air. Allow the surface to dry slightly, but water before the fine root mat becomes dry throughout. Lift the pot and probe below the live rhizome of ‘Lambada’. Dark veins look sunken or almost black

Strong venation is part of the cultivar’s pattern when it remains organised and as firm as the surrounding blade. Check darkness that spreads away from the veins, becomes glassy or continues into a soft petiole.

A patterned leaf curls inward

Check the root ball, drainage and nearby airflow. A light pot can pull the margin inward, and salt residue can leave isolated crisp sections. If curling continues in wet mix, inspect the roots before watering again.

Low clump grows to one side

A surface rhizome can carry new foliage towards one edge as older leaves are shed behind it. Turn the pot for balanced filtered light and move firm growth into a slightly wider container when it reaches the rim.

Keeping ‘Lambada’ away from curious pets

‘Lambada’, including its pink-flushed leaves, contains soluble calcium oxalates and is toxic to cats and dogs. A pet that chews the leaves or a stem may drool or vomit; roots and buried tissue contain the largest share of the toxic principle. Keep the pot beyond a pet’s reach. Collect removed leaves and block access to exposed roots or crown pieces during repotting. Recheck access after moving furniture or placing the pot on a lower surface. If drooling, vomiting or swallowing follows contact with the leaves or a stem, contact a veterinarian. Bag discarded roots, spent substrate and cuttings after repotting, then wash hands.

The dance name ‘Lambada’

Lambada is a Brazilian partner dance and music style that became internationally popular in the late twentieth century. It continues the dance theme found in many commercially named rex begonias.

These cultivars belong to the Rex Cultorum Group. They descend from repeated crossings and selections involving Begonia rex and other species.
