Begonia rex 'Fireworks' is a larger Rex Begonia with pink-edged leaves, a grey-green band and a deep purple to almost black centre.
This cultivar grows broader than many compact rex types. Its leaves rise from a shallow rhizome on fleshy petioles, which can carry pinkish-red hairs. In warm, humid conditions, mature plants can form a broader crown with overlapping older leaves.
Begonia 'Fireworks' has received the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
Give 'Fireworks' bright filtered light so new leaves can develop without scorching. Keep it away from direct midday sun.
Keep the mix lightly moist during active growth, then let the upper layer begin to dry before watering again. Avoid soggy or compacted substrate around the rhizome.
Larger leaves need a mix that drains well and stays open after watering. Fine bark, pumice or perlite helps keep water moving and gives the roots more air.
The larger leaves mark at the edges more easily in dry air, so steady humidity helps. Airflow is important around the crown and between the petioles. Keep 'Fireworks' around 18–26°C and use weak fertiliser while it is producing fresh leaves.
Remove old leaves and faded flower stems before they trap moisture around the rhizome. In summer, it can go outside in sheltered bright shade, away from wind, heavy rain and strong sun.
During trimming or repotting, clear away broken leaves and rhizome pieces so pets and children cannot reach them. Begonias contain calcium oxalates, with the rhizome and roots being the most irritating parts if eaten.
