Begonia rex 'Escargot' is a Rex Begonia with leaves that curl inward at the base like a snail shell. Silver-green and olive-green bands follow the twist of each blade as the leaves open.
The leaves are asymmetric and lightly textured, often with fine hairs along the surface and edges. Reddish petioles lift the curled leaves above a shallow rhizome. New leaves gradually fill out the rounded crown.
The name 'Escargot' means “snail” in French and refers directly to the coiled leaf base.
Place 'Escargot' in bright filtered light. Turn the pot regularly if light comes mainly from one side, so the crown develops evenly.
Let the upper substrate start to dry before watering again. Water the mix directly and keep droplets out of the curled leaf bases, where they can leave marks.
The substrate should hold light moisture but still drain quickly. Fine bark with perlite or pumice keeps enough air around the shallow rhizome.
Around 50–70% humidity helps reduce dry leaf edges. Keep air moving gently around the plant, especially in cabinets or enclosed shelves. A warm spot around 18–26°C suits it well.
A shallow, wide pot gives the rhizome room to spread. Clear away old leaves and spent flower stems before they rest against the crown.
White flowers can appear on mature, settled plants. Cut them back once they fade.
Fallen leaves and rhizome pieces should be kept away from pets and children. Begonias contain calcium oxalates that can irritate the mouth and digestive tract if eaten.
