Begonia rex 'Chayo' is a compact rex type with silvery pink leaves, darker veins and a low mounding crown. New leaves often open paler and gain more contrast as they mature.
The leaves are asymmetric and softly textured, with darker veins visible across the blade even on young plants. Growth comes from a short creeping rhizome, a thick stem at the substrate surface that sends up new leaves. Its shallow roots do best in a low pot with drainage.
Give 'Chayo' bright indirect light, softened by a curtain or placed away from harsh midday sun. In low light, the petioles stretch and the crown opens up.
Water the substrate once the top 2 cm feel lightly dry. Pour water onto the mix, not over the leaves, and let the pot drain fully.
Use a fine, open substrate with bark and mineral pieces so water moves through easily around the rhizome.
Humidity around 50–70% helps reduce dry edges, especially while new leaves are opening. Keep 'Chayo' warm, around 18–26°C, and use weak fertiliser during active growth.
Choose a shallow pot with drainage. Repot when the rhizome reaches the edge or the substrate starts to compact. Leaf sections and rhizome divisions can root in warm, humid conditions.
Remove old leaves and spent stems before they sit against the rhizome.
Keep Begonia rex 'Chayo' away from pets and children that may nibble or eat plant material. Begonias contain soluble calcium oxalates, especially in the rhizome and roots, and can irritate the mouth and stomach if ingested.
