Begonia pustulata

A Mexican endemic from Veracruz and Oaxaca

Begonia pustulata is endemic to Mexico. A taxonomic revision places it in eastern Veracruz and on the lower northern slopes of the Sierra Madre in Oaxaca.

Older reports from Guatemala were based on Begonia imperialis specimens misidentified as B. Pustulata. The verified native range is restricted to Mexico, including eastern Veracruz and northern Oaxaca.

Growing Begonia pustulata indoors

Light

For usable indoor light, stand Begonia pustulata close to an east or north-east window, or within about 1 m of a south or west window behind a light curtain. Too much unfiltered light is visible when the upper leaf surface bleaches or scars and the rhizome dries unevenly. A position several metres from a window is too dark when petioles stretch, the mound opens and colour or surface texture becomes less clear. Healthy growth shows the low quilted surface and contrasting leaf pattern most clearly. Dim conditions weaken its form, while direct sun causes scarring and does not improve the plant. More sun is not better once growth is compact and colour is clear.

Watering

Lift the pot and test the mix. Water Begonia pustulata after the upper 2–3 cm has dried while the shallow root zone below remains faintly moist. Water from several points across the surface, continue to runoff and discard the collected water. A dry surface is acceptable. A fully dry shallow root zone can cost feeder roots and older leaves. Do not bury the rhizome in moist mix. Its feeder roots need moisture, while the rhizome itself needs an exposed, airy surface. Check the shallow root zone below the newest growth on pustulata as well as the exposed pot edge. A warm, well-lit plant in a close-fitting pot needs water sooner than one in cool, weak light.

Substrate and roots

When repotting Begonia pustulata, take care not to damage a broad surface rhizome with most active roots in the upper layer of mix. Choose a small-particle Begonia mix that combines coir or peat-free substrate with fine bark and pumice. Avoid both compressed compost and large bark chunks. The fine shallow roots need even moisture with open air spaces. Use a shallow, broad drainage pot and keep the top of the rhizome at its present level. Keep the rhizome of pustulata uncovered and give its growing end open surface space.

Temperature

Maintain Begonia pustulata at about 18–26 °C and avoid sustained exposure below 15 °C. A cold sill can chill the shallow roots before the room thermometer shows a problem. Keep it outside the direct stream of a radiator, fan heater or strong cooling vent.

Humidity and airflow

At home, increase humidity towards 50–70% only when correct root moisture still produces dry-edged new leaves. Pair moderate humidity around pustulata with enough air movement to dry the crown after cleaning. A quiet fan outside an enclosure or normal room circulation is enough. The leaves should not flutter constantly.

Fertilising

Use a complete foliage fertiliser at about quarter strength every five to six weeks for Begonia pustulata while it is producing new leaves or stems. Continue lightly at any time of year if growth remains steady. Pause when cool conditions stop it. Strong feed cannot correct poor light and instead leaves damaging fertiliser salts in the shallow root zone. The shallow roots of pustulata need regular dilute nutrition; a concentrated dose can burn them.

Repotting

Do not repot Begonia pustulata by the calendar. Wait until the rhizome reaches the rim, roots fill the shallow pot, water moves unevenly or the substrate has compacted. The next pot should be roughly 2–3 cm wider and retain the same basic shape. Keep the rooted centre of the rhizome together and remove only loose old mix. A division needs roots and a live bud. Choose a period when roots and leaves are growing, and avoid severe root work in a cold, wet room. Set pustulata so the growing rhizome has room to advance across the fresh mix.

Support, pruning, handling and leaf care

Let the surface rhizome of Begonia pustulata creep across a shallow pot without covering its base. Separate a section only after it has formed its own feeder roots and growing point. If one side faces the window, rotate by small steps only after the newest leaf has hardened. The raised surfaces across the pustulate patterned leaves of Begonia pustulata catch dust but should not be pressed or polished. Use a soft brush between the bumps, supporting the blade from beneath. Prune dead tissue back to a healthy base, taking care not to nick the next bud or leaf.

How to help Begonia pustulata recover

Raised leaf areas brown or flatten

Dry ridges after direct sun or a missed watering will remain crisp; soft depressions that enlarge suggest moisture-related decay. Check both the root ball and the lesion texture. Keep the pustulate surface dry, move the plant into filtered light if scorched and remove leaves with active soft lesions.

Leaves curl although the mix remains wet

Curling in wet mix often comes from damaged or airless roots. Inspect the fine roots and low rhizome for browning or softness; compacted wet mix can prevent oxygen uptake and leave foliage unable to hydrate. Remove dead roots, restore an airy medium and avoid increasing water until the pot begins to dry normally.

Softness in the surface rhizome

Lift the rhizome clear of dense substrate and cut away every dark soft part. Keep only clean, firm tissue, then repot shallowly with the crown exposed. Save a healthy textured leaf for propagation if decay is close to the last healthy growing point.

Water-soaked spots cross the natural texture

Normal pustules are organised, dry and stable. Translucent blisters, yellow halos or merging necrotic patches may indicate bacterial leaf spot. Isolate, remove affected leaves with disinfected tools and stop splashing the canopy. Petiole or crown damage calls for urgent removal.

Hardened and misshapen new leaves

Allow one young leaf to expand before judging its raised texture; the relief may become clearer with maturity. Several rigid, undersized blades show that new growth is being disrupted. Examine the growth point for physical damage, then check whether the shallow root zone has dried hard or remained airless.

Begonia pustulata and pet safety

Begonia pustulata, including its fine-haired leaves, contains soluble calcium oxalates and is toxic to cats and dogs. A pet that chews the leaves or a stem may drool or vomit; the highest concentration occurs in the roots. Division can leave small rhizome and root fragments on the work surface. Count and discard every rhizome and root piece before pets return to the area. Keep pets outside the work area until the divided plant, used substrate and tools have been cleared. If drooling, vomiting or swallowing follows contact with the leaves or a stem, contact a veterinarian. Bag discarded roots, spent substrate and cuttings after repotting, then wash hands.

A leaf covered in small bumps

The epithet pustulata means pustulate: marked with small raised bumps or blister-like swellings. It describes the uneven texture of the leaf surface in botanical terms.

Danish botanist Frederik Michael Liebmann described this southern Mexican species in 1852. The epithet may sound medical in English, but here it is simply a precise word for surface texture.
