Begonia ‘Pink Minx’

Kit Jeans Mounger introduced Begonia ‘Pink Minx’ in 2002 from a cross between Begonia aconitifolia and the unidentified plant Begonia U062.

Begonia aconitifolia comes from Brazil’s humid Atlantic Forest, a warm, rain-rich environment with light filtered through surrounding vegetation. U062 reached cultivation through material received in Kolkata, India, via Thailand; its original wild locality was not recorded.

Caring for Begonia ‘Pink Minx’ indoors

Light

Begonia ‘Pink Minx’ grows most evenly beside a large east-facing window, or 0.5–1.5 m back from a south or west window behind a sheer curtain. Too much unfiltered light is visible when bleached tan patches and crisp margins appear on the window-facing leaves. With too little usable light, the canes lengthen between nodes, lean towards the window and carry smaller, duller new leaves. Do not move it into harsher sun just to deepen the colour. The plant develops the pink colouring across the deeply lobed foliage through natural pigmentation. Stronger sun increases the risk of scorch. Low light weakens the display and excess light bleaches it.

Watering

Check moisture in the root zone directly: water Begonia ‘Pink Minx’ when the upper 2–3 cm has dried while the centre of the root ball still feels faintly moist. Soak the substrate evenly, let it drain fully and never leave the inner pot standing in water. Do not wait for every leaf to droop before watering. By then the fine roots beneath the canes may already be stressed. A root ball that stays wet loses oxygen around the fine roots and may soften the lowest part of a cane. On ‘Pink Minx’, check the centre of the root ball as well as the surface. Tall canes can hide a core that is still damp. A warm, well-lit plant in a close-fitting pot needs water sooner than one in cool, weak light.

Substrate and roots

In its pot, Begonia ‘Pink Minx’ forms fine, easily torn roots below the cane bases. Aim for a springy blend based on coir or peat-free substrate with fine bark and pumice or perlite. Dense compost stays wet around the cane bases and becomes harder to water evenly as it ages. A stable drainage container suits the canes. Choose its width from the root ball; the canopy can extend beyond the rim. Use only enough extra pot depth to stabilise ‘Pink Minx’; unused wet mix remains saturated for too long.

Temperature

A realistic indoor range for Begonia ‘Pink Minx’ is 18–27 °C, and it should not remain below 14 °C. Winter ventilation should not blow across damp roots or soft new leaves. Keep it outside the direct stream of a radiator, fan heater or strong cooling vent.

Humidity and airflow

Watch how the new leaves of Begonia ‘Pink Minx’ open. Household humidity is normally sufficient away from heaters, although 55–70% can improve leaf expansion during active growth. Clean, full-sized new leaves on ‘Pink Minx’ indicate that humidity is sufficient. Keep humid air moving gently so leaf bases and stem tissue can dry.

Fertilising

Use a balanced complete houseplant fertiliser at quarter to half strength every three to five weeks for Begonia ‘Pink Minx’ while new leaves or shoots are forming. A plant that is still unfolding leaves in winter still uses nutrients, while an inactive one does not. Strong feed cannot correct poor light and instead leaves damaging fertiliser salts in the shallow root zone. Extra fertiliser will not strengthen weak canes on ‘Pink Minx’. Useful light must support the growth first.

Repotting

Move Begonia ‘Pink Minx’ into fresh substrate when roots circle the pot or emerge below, water runs through dry channels, the canes become unstable or the mix loses its spring. A pot 2–4 cm wider is normally enough for the next stage of growth. Keep as much of the fine root network together as possible and loosen only compressed outer roots. Work while the plant is actively growing in stable warmth so new roots can resume quickly. Restake ‘Pink Minx’ immediately after repotting, but leave each tie loose enough for the cane to thicken.

Support, pruning, handling and leaf care

Give Begonia ‘Pink Minx’ a light stake before the narrow lobed canopy pulls a cane sideways. Prune just above a node to control height, keeping enough leafy cane to sustain regrowth. Turn the pot gradually over several weeks so fresh growth can adjust without twisting. The thin foliage of Begonia ‘Pink Minx’ creases easily. Rinse with lukewarm water or lift loose dust with a very soft brush. Rubbing can mark the blades. Cut fully spent leaves or flower stems cleanly at the base. Tearing can injure the crown.

Deeply cut lobes brown at their tips

A single dry spell can brown the many narrow tips and leave the pink-silver centre healthy. Confirm that the pot is light before rehydrating it, and shield the canopy from heated airflow. Ongoing tip loss in wet mix calls for a root inspection.

A divided leaf looks torn

Pink Minx has a deeply cut outline, but fresh physical damage crosses the normal lobe shape and exposes pale tissue. Compare several leaves. A dry stationary split can remain; move the plant where new foliage has room to open and remove only a tear that becomes soft.

Compact canes become tall and sparse

Widely spaced nodes and progressively smaller leaves indicate insufficient filtered light or an unpruned leading shoot. Brighten the position gradually and cut a stretched cane just above a node to activate lower buds. Root the colourful healthy top if the plant needs rebuilding.

A new lobed leaf will not open fully

One folded leaf can be damaged by shipping, a brief dry spell or contact with an older blade. Keep conditions steady and allow the leaf to open by itself. The next leaf is a better guide to recovery. Remove it if the trapped section turns wet or begins to soften into the growing tip.

‘Pink Minx’: toxicity and pets

‘Pink Minx’, including its deeply divided blades, contains soluble calcium oxalates and is toxic to cats and dogs. A pet that chews the leaves or a stem may drool or vomit; the greatest concentration remains in the root system and other buried parts. Collect pruned stems and fallen leaves from below the upright canopy. Block access to the open root ball and every cane cutting during repotting. Choose a position where fallen leaves cannot land within a pet’s reach as the upright stems gain height. If drooling, vomiting or swallowing follows contact with the leaves or a stem, contact a veterinarian. Bag discarded roots, spent substrate and cuttings after repotting, then wash hands.

The playful name ‘Pink Minx’

‘Pink Minx’ combines a colour word with minx, an old English word for a playful or mischievous person. Together they make an expressive English cultivar name.

Begonia has a commemorative origin. Charles Plumier named the genus for Michel Bégon, a French administrator and supporter of natural-history collecting.
