Begonia pavonina Ridl., commonly known as the Peacock Begonia, is an extraordinary species prized for its iridescent blue-green leaves that shimmer under certain lighting conditions. Native to the cloud forests of Southeast Asia, this rare and visually striking Begonia thrives in high humidity and low light environments. The metallic blue sheen of its foliage is a natural adaptation to the dim understory of the rainforest, making it one of the most unique Begonias available for collectors.
Replicating the natural cloud forest conditions of Begonia pavonina will enhance its iridescent sheen. Keeping temperatures stable, humidity high, and light levels moderate will ensure lush, vibrant foliage.
The genus name Begonia honors Michel Bégon, a French botanist. The species name pavonina is derived from the Latin word for “peacock,” referencing the dazzling, iridescent coloration of its leaves.
