Begonia masoniana ‘Rock’ is a horticultural selection of Begonia masoniana, a species native to Guangxi in southern China and northern Vietnam.

The species grows in sheltered forest and limestone environments, where seasonal rainfall, warm humid air and filtered light shape its habitat. Rooting surfaces differ among sites.

Light

A practical home position for Begonia masoniana ‘Rock’ is close to an east or north-east window, or within about 1 m of a south or west window behind a light curtain. Acclimate it gradually, since sudden intense exposure means the upper leaf surface bleaches or scars and the rhizome dries unevenly. Insufficient light shows as this change: petioles stretch, the mound opens and colour or surface texture becomes less clear. Do not move it into harsher sun just to deepen the colour. Healthy growth shows the compact crown and rough rock-like leaf texture most clearly. Weak light reduces its definition by weakening growth, while harsh sun damages the surface without improving it.

Watering

Let the upper layer change first, then water Begonia masoniana ‘Rock’ after the upper 2–3 cm has dried while the shallow root zone below remains faintly moist. Apply enough water to rewet every side of the pot and allow all excess to drain away. The upper mix must drain and breathe. A rhizome held against wet compost can deteriorate before the leaves react. Turn the container gradually between growth flushes. Sudden large rotations make soft stems or petioles bend towards the new light direction. Compact quilted leaves wilt together

The small clump may dry quickly at the surface but remain wet underneath. Check the entire root ball: water a genuinely light pot, but unpot a heavy one that stays limp. Trim brown soft roots and reduce excess potting volume so the compact rhizome is not surrounded by stagnant mix.

Brown pits on rugged leaves

Dry, sharply bounded pits can follow sun or spray damage. Soft pits that expand through the quilted tissue are signs of decay. Keep the leaf surface dry, remove spreading lesions and improve airflow through the compact crown. Clear dead leaf pieces from around the rhizome.

Cut the affected end back in small stages until the inside is clean, firm and healthy. Disinfect the blade between cuts and reroot the surviving portion shallowly. If decay has reached the centre, take a healthy leaf cutting immediately.

Hardened and uneven new leaves

Inspect within the compact crown for broad mites and thrips. Broad mites produce brittle bronzed distortion; thrips leave irregular pale scarring and black specks. Isolate the plant and apply the chosen treatment around hidden petiole bases. Keep the rhizome from becoming saturated.

Handling Begonia masoniana ‘Rock’ safely around pets

Begonia masoniana ‘Rock’, including its compact green blades, contains soluble calcium oxalates and is toxic to cats and dogs. A pet that chews the leaves or a stem may drool or vomit; the concentration is greatest in roots and related underground tissues. Division can leave small rhizome and root fragments on the work surface. Count and discard every rhizome and root piece before pets return to the area. Keep pets outside the work area until the divided plant, used substrate and tools have been cleared. If drooling, vomiting or swallowing follows contact with the leaves or a stem, contact a veterinarian. Bag discarded roots, spent substrate and cuttings after repotting, then wash hands.

From ‘Rock’ to masoniana

The species epithet masoniana records Maurice L. Mason, the British plantsman who introduced this begonia to Britain. The accepted name Begonia masoniana Irmsch. ex Ziesenh. was validly published in The Begonian in 1971.

‘Rock’ identifies this compact cultivated selection, while iron cross begonia remains the older common name applied to the species more broadly.
