Begonia maculata ‘Tamaya’ is a tall, upright cultivar of the iconic polka-dot Begonia, prized for its striking spotted leaves and decorative cane-like stems. Its elongated, asymmetrical leaves are deep olive-green, speckled with irregular silver-white dots that stand out against the dark background. The undersides glow with a rich burgundy tone, adding contrast and depth. Trained into a tree-like form, ‘Tamaya’ grows vertically with branching stems, often producing delicate pink flowers when happy. Its sculptural silhouette and fast growth make it a favourite for bright indoor spots.
Begonia maculata originates from the Atlantic rainforest of southeast Brazil, where it grows in moist, partially shaded conditions along forest edges. The cultivar ‘Tamaya’ was developed for ornamental use, selected for its tall, elegant structure and branching growth. Unlike wild types, it is usually grown staked or pruned into a tree-form and blooms more reliably indoors. With warmth, humidity, and bright light, it becomes a showy, upright presence in any collection.
Caution: Like all cane-type Begonia, it is toxic if ingested – keep out of reach of pets and children.
Train Begonia ‘Tamaya’ on a support stake to enhance its tree-like form. Pinch the tips to encourage side shoots and fuller growth. Mimic its native habitat by keeping light bright but filtered, humidity high, and watering consistent. With time and good care, it may produce hanging clusters of soft pink flowers that contrast beautifully with the polka-dotted leaves.
Begonia is named after Michel Bégon, a French plant collector. The species name maculata means “spotted” in Latin, referring to the leaf markings. The cultivar name ‘Tamaya’ is a trade name often used for cane-form Begonia maculata trained into upright, branching shapes.
Elegant, upright, and full of texture – Begonia maculata ‘Tamaya’ adds architectural beauty and tropical charm to any room. Order now and train your own spotted Begonia tree.
