Begonia ‘Looking Glass’

A cane hybrid with tropical American ancestry

Begonia ‘Looking Glass’ is a horticultural cane hybrid. Much of the wider cane Begonia group descends from tropical American species.

Wild cane Begonias commonly grow within warm, humid forest vegetation, where rain is regular and surrounding growth breaks up direct sunlight.

Light

Keep Begonia ‘Looking Glass’ beside a large east-facing window, or 0.5–1.5 m back from a south or west window behind a sheer curtain. Screen harsh midday rays because bleached tan patches and crisp margins appear on the window-facing leaves. Insufficient light shows as this change: the canes lengthen between nodes, lean towards the window and carry smaller, duller new leaves. The plant naturally displays the silver upper surface and red leaf backs. This appearance is inherited: too little light weakens its definition, while stronger direct sun cannot add to it. Move the plant towards stronger light in small stages.

Watering

Check Begonia ‘Looking Glass’ below the surface and water when the upper 2–3 cm has dried while the centre of the root ball still feels faintly moist. Apply enough water to rewet every side of the pot and allow all excess to drain away. If the centre remains saturated, roots weaken before the tall canopy necessarily shows a clear warning. A brief surface dry phase is useful, but letting the whole root ball dry can cost fine roots and lower leaves. On ‘Looking Glass’, check the centre of the root ball as well as the surface. Tall canes can hide a core that is still damp. A root-filled warm pot dries quickly, while unused pot volume can keep the centre damp for much longer.

Substrate and roots

Begonia ‘Looking Glass’ depends on fine fibrous roots beneath upright canes. Use a moisture-holding but freely draining houseplant mix containing small bark and perlite or pumice. Dense compost stays wet around the cane bases and becomes harder to water evenly as it ages. Give the canes physical stability with pot weight or a stake; an oversized root ball remains wet for too long. Use only enough extra pot depth to stabilise ‘Looking Glass’; unused wet mix remains saturated for too long.

Temperature

Begonia ‘Looking Glass’ grows reliably at 18–27 °C. Protect it below about 14 °C. Do not let leaves touch a winter pane or place the root ball in the path of an open-door draught. Rapid changes between heated air and a cool night position can trigger leaf loss.

Humidity and airflow

For Begonia ‘Looking Glass’, aim for stable moderate humidity and keep the plant out of persistently damp air. Around 45–60% is workable and 55–70% is useful while new leaves open. Clean, full-sized new leaves on ‘Looking Glass’ indicate that humidity is sufficient. Leave space between plants so moist leaves and the top of the pot can dry normally.

Fertilising

During active growth, give Begonia ‘Looking Glass’ a balanced complete houseplant fertiliser at quarter to half strength every three to five weeks. Base feeding on active growth, useful light, stable warmth and normal water use. Fresh mix may already contain fertiliser, so delay feeding until roots resume; an immediate dose would add unnecessary salts. Extra fertiliser will not strengthen weak canes on ‘Looking Glass’. Useful light must support the growth first.

Repotting

Begonia ‘Looking Glass’ needs a new pot once roots circle the pot or emerge below, water runs through dry channels, the canes become unstable or the mix loses its spring. Move to a pot only 2–4 cm wider so unused substrate does not remain wet. Remove only loose exhausted mix. Stripping the roots clean creates unnecessary damage. Repot during visible growth and keep the plant at the same depth afterward. Restake ‘Looking Glass’ immediately after repotting, but leave each tie loose enough for the cane to thicken.

Support, pruning, handling and leaf care

Tie the tall canes of Begonia ‘Looking Glass’ loosely to a slim stake so its large silver leaves are not carried by bending stems. Cutting a cane above a node during growth encourages a lower replacement shoot. Turn the container gradually between growth flushes. Sudden large rotations make soft stems or petioles bend towards the new light direction. Support each mature leaf of Begonia ‘Looking Glass’ with one hand while cleaning it with a barely damp soft cloth. Never lift or carry the plant by a petiole. Wait until an ageing leaf is fully yellow, then cut it at the base. Do not pull at a resistant stalk.

Pale papery burns on silver leaves

The large reflective blades can scorch quickly against hot glass or after a move into direct sun. Damage is dry and strongest on the exposed side. Return the plant to bright filtered light and let new leaves replace the marked ones.

Mirror-like surface shows dull rings

Dust and dried mineral residue are conspicuous on Looking Glass. Test one ring with a soft damp cloth. Mineral residue should lift away; a bruise or scorch remains within the leaf. Let the leaf dry in moving air and avoid repeatedly rubbing the delicate silver coating.

Canes grow thin and widely spaced

Long gaps between smaller leaves show that the cane is stretching. Increase filtered light gradually, turn the pot and shorten an overlong cane above a node once the plant is active. Support a weak but firm stem. Cut the cane back if its base is dark or soft.

A large leaf drops from a firm cane

A heavy blade may be shed after a dry root ball, cold draught or abrupt move even when its node survives. Stabilise the plant and look for a new bud at that node. Continued loss from one cane calls for a close check of that cane’s base.

Why ‘Looking Glass’ belongs out of pets’ reach

‘Looking Glass’, including its large silver blades, contains soluble calcium oxalates and is toxic to cats and dogs. A pet that chews the leaves or a stem may drool or vomit; roots and buried tissue contain the largest share of the toxic principle. Collect pruned stems and fallen leaves from below the upright canopy. Block access to the open root ball and every cane cutting during repotting. Choose a position where fallen leaves cannot land within a pet’s reach as the upright stems gain height. If drooling, vomiting or swallowing follows contact with the leaves or a stem, contact a veterinarian. Bag discarded roots, spent substrate and cuttings after repotting, then wash hands.

Why the name says ‘Looking Glass’

Looking glass is an older English expression for a mirror. For this foliage cultivar, the phrase evokes the bright reflective silver surface of the leaves and functions as the complete cultivated name.

The older name Begonia commemorates Michel Bégon. Charles Plumier coined it before Linnaeus adopted the genus in 1753.

The cultivated name is associated with large silver blades crossed by narrow olive-green veins and large silver blades crossed by narrow olive-green veins, which keep the wording connected with the plant customers recognise.
