Thick peltate leaves rise on upright petioles from the creeping base of Begonia kingiana. Peltate means the leaf stalk joins the underside of the blade, not the edge. The blades are rounded to angular and firm to the touch, with patterns that can include green, bronze, deep purple, dark banding or mottled markings. The plant grows from a rhizome, a thick creeping stem that sits close to the substrate surface and slowly creeps outward. New leaves appear along this base, giving the plant a low, spreading habit. A shallow pot fits this growth well, because the rhizome stays near the surface and the lower mix dries more evenly. It also suits warm plant cabinets, humid shelves and ventilated terrariums.
Begonia kingiana is native from Peninsular Thailand to Peninsular Malaysia, where it grows in wet tropical conditions. Indoors, keep it warm, lightly moist and airy around the roots.
Small Begonia flowers may appear on mature plants in warm, steady conditions. Remove faded flower stems once they finish. Keep cut rhizome sections and old root material away from pets and small children. Begonia roots and rhizomes can irritate the mouth and stomach if eaten. Begonia honours Michel Bégon, while kingiana honours George King. As the rhizome creeps outward, it produces firm mottled leaves that stay low and close to the surface.
