A waterfall-cliff Begonia from Borneo

Begonia dracopelta is native to Borneo and has been recorded in Kalimantan and Sarawak.

Wild plants grow on vertical, continuously moist rock around waterfalls. Water, humidity and shade are constant features of this habitat, but the roots cling to an exposed rock face with little material in which moisture can stagnate.

How to keep Begonia dracopelta healthy

Light

Give Begonia dracopelta a position under strong filtered light at an east or north-east window, or beneath a cool grow light in a ventilated enclosure. Direct sun is unnecessary and can overheat the dark or bullate surface even when the enclosure air feels mild. Insufficient light shows as this change: new leaves remain small and weak, and the low plant stops spreading across the pot. Use the newest mature leaf as the light check. The plant expresses the rounded shield shape and deeply raised surface best when growth is compact and well lit. Harsh direct sun causes damage and does not strengthen the colour or texture.

Watering

Begonia dracopelta is ready for water as the surface starts to lose moisture, before the shallow mineral root zone becomes dry. Apply enough water to rewet every side of the pot and allow all excess to drain away. Standing water and fine compact substrate are unsafe because the roots need oxygen even in constantly humid air. The small rhizome or thick leaves provide limited reserve, but the fine active roots should not be repeatedly desiccated. Water should pass promptly through the mineral mix around dracopelta. Humidity around the leaves does not make stagnant roots safe. Light, temperature, leaf area, pot size and pot material all change how quickly the mix dries.

Substrate and roots

The root structure of Begonia dracopelta is a low rhizome or compact crown with fine shallow roots that need a mineral, oxygen-rich root zone. Use an airy blend of fine pumice or lava, small bark and a modest amount of moisture-holding coir or chopped sphagnum. Dense peat smothers the shallow roots, and very large dry chunks leave the root tips without contact. Choose a low drainage pot close to the root spread and keep the rhizome or crown fully exposed. For dracopelta, use small mineral particles ; coarse decorative stones leave gaps around the fine roots.

Temperature

Aim for stable temperatures around 20–27 °C for Begonia dracopelta, using 17 °C as the lower limit. Do not let leaves touch a winter pane or place the root ball in the path of an open-door draught. Hot dry airflow damages soft growth and makes the upper mix dry faster than the roots below.

Humidity and airflow

Keep the humidity around Begonia dracopelta steady. Humidity around 70–85% is normally needed for steady growth, provided a gentle current moves across the pot and leaves. Inside the warm enclosure, keep the small bullate leaves clear of wet glass and leave air space around the low crown. Leave space between plants so moist leaves and the top of the pot can dry normally.

Fertilising

Apply a complete low-salt fertiliser at one-eighth to one-quarter strength every four to six weeks to Begonia dracopelta only while the plant is growing actively. Base feeding on active growth, useful light, stable warmth and normal water use. If leaf growth slows while salts collect at the pot rim, flush first and resume at a weaker concentration. Use the low end of the dose for dracopelta. A small mineral root zone needs very little nutrient at one time.

Repotting

Give Begonia dracopelta a new pot when the shallow roots fill their pot, the crown or rhizome reaches the edge, drainage slows or fine particles have settled densely. Move to a pot only 1–2 cm wider so unused substrate does not remain wet. Keep the shallow root mass attached to some old substrate and do not scrub mineral particles from the fine roots. Repot during visible growth and keep the plant at the same depth afterward. Keep the crown or rhizome of dracopelta above the fresh mineral-rich mix ; stabilise the container without burying the crown or rhizome.

Support, pruning, handling and leaf care

Keep the crown or creeping rhizome of Begonia dracopelta on the surface without staking it. Redirect new growth gently so this foliage remains clear of wet glass and stagnant corners. Turn the container gradually between growth flushes. Sudden large rotations make soft stems or petioles bend towards the new light direction. The raised surfaces across the rounded peltate bullate leaves of Begonia dracopelta catch dust but should not be pressed or polished. Use a soft brush between the bumps, supporting the blade from beneath. Wait until an ageing leaf is fully yellow, then cut it at the base. Do not pull at a resistant stalk.

Signs of stress in Begonia dracopelta

Raised green sections are mistaken for scale

The fixed green ridges and deep channels are the normal bullate surface of Begonia dracopelta. Scale sits separately and can often be lifted from the leaf. Treat only when removable insects, honeydew or other pest signs are present.

An older stem arches and roots at a node

Young shoots begin upright, then older growth may become semi-erect or arch. A firm node rooting where it touches the substrate is normal and can widen the plant. Cut a watery or collapsing stem back to firm, healthy tissue.

Softness in channels between the ridges

Water trapped in the deep depressions can accompany local decay. Keep the foliage dry, improve gentle air exchange and remove a leaf when a wet-looking area expands or develops grey growth. Follow any softness down to the petiole.

Small or distorted new shield-shaped leaves

Inspect the newest growth for thrips, mites and mealybugs, then check the fine roots if no pest is found. Several hard or scarred new leaves show that the problem is continuing. Treat the cause before changing humidity or adding fertiliser.

Keeping Begonia dracopelta away from curious pets

Begonia dracopelta, including its small shield-shaped blades, contains soluble calcium oxalates and is toxic to cats and dogs. A pet that chews the leaves or a stem may drool or vomit; roots and other buried tissues contain the greatest concentration. Division can leave small rhizome and root fragments on the work surface. Count and discard every rhizome and root piece before pets return to the area. Keep pets outside the work area until the divided plant, used substrate and tools have been cleared. If drooling, vomiting or swallowing follows contact with the leaves or a stem, contact a veterinarian. Bag discarded roots, spent substrate and cuttings after repotting, then wash hands.

A name for peltate leaves

The epithet dracopelta combines Latin draco, “dragon”, with Greek peltē, “small shield”. It refers to the plant’s strongly textured, shield-shaped leaves.

Begonia dracopelta was formally published by Wisnu H. Ardi in 2019 and is an accepted species native to Borneo.
