Dense silver spotting covers the long, asymmetrical leaves of Begonia maculata ‘Double Dot’. The plant grows on upright, jointed canes with a bamboo-like structure. The leaf tops are dark green, while the undersides show a red tone as the foliage angles away from the stems. The canes grow upward first, then branch more readily with age or pruning. Leaves grow from visible nodes along the stems. A node is the point where a leaf or new shoot can form. Cutting just above a node encourages side shoots and helps the lower canes keep more leaves. Established plants may also produce small hanging clusters of pale flowers.
Begonia maculata is native to Brazil, including the Rio de Janeiro region, where it grows in warm, humid conditions. ‘Double Dot’ describes the especially dense silver spotting on this cultivated form.
Stem cuttings are the simplest way to propagate or reshape this plant. Use a healthy cane section with at least one node and keep it warm while it roots. Keep cut stems, fallen leaves and rooted pieces away from pets and children. Begonia tissue can irritate the mouth and stomach if ingested. Maculata means spotted, matching the pale markings on the leaves. On maturing stems, Begonia maculata ‘Double Dot’ carries dense silver-spotted leaves with red-toned undersides.
