Begonia chingipengii is a striking rhizomatous species discovered in the forests of Luzon, Philippines. Known for its bold leaf shape and contrasting coloration, this tropical perennial grows close to the ground, spreading with thick green rhizomes and displaying ovate leaves with dark green upper sides and a rich maroon underside. The leaf veins form a dramatic contrast that makes each leaf pop, while tall, branched flower stalks rise well above the foliage during bloom periods. This species combines compact foliage with structural elegance, making it a standout in any rare Begonia collection.
This Begonia species is endemic to Luzon, Philippines, where it grows on rocky slopes above forest streams at moderate elevations around 400 – 500 m. The habitat is defined by warm temperatures, filtered sunlight, and high humidity. Its name honors the botanist whose fieldwork led to its discovery and classification. Begonia chingipengii belongs to the Baryandra section and is one of the few species in its group with such prominently contrasting leaf coloring and robust flowering structures.
This species prefers shallow containers where its rhizomes can spread laterally. It performs especially well in enclosed or semi-enclosed environments like terrariums or shaded greenhouses. Understanding its forest-edge origin helps recreate the right conditions: warm roots, humid air, and filtered light. These conditions allow the foliage to remain vibrant and the plant to send up tall flowering stalks with pinkish blooms.
The genus name “Begonia” honors French patron of botany Michel Bégon. The species epithet "chingipengii" recognizes Dr. Ching-I Peng for his contributions to botanical exploration and discovery in the Philippines. The species was described in 2014 by botanist Rosario Rubite.
