Begonia × albopicta is a cane-like hybrid Begonia with upright stems, narrow green leaves and fine silver-white spotting across the leaf surface. The elongated leaves show red-toned undersides, so the plant has depth from the side as well as from above.

This hybrid forms a shrubby indoor plant with jointed stems that can be pruned and rooted easily. Mature plants grown in bright filtered light may produce pale pink to white flower clusters above the foliage, giving the spotted stems a softer seasonal detail.

In a pot, Begonia × albopicta grows from fibrous roots into a leafy, upright plant. Older stems can become bare near the base as they lengthen, so tip pruning helps keep the plant fuller and also supplies propagation material. Stem cuttings root readily in a warm, airy setup.

• Light: Set the plant in bright filtered light, such as an east-facing window or a position set back from stronger sun. This supports sturdy stems and clear spotting while protecting the thinner leaf tissue.
• Watering: Let the upper substrate layer start to dry before watering again. During active growth, keep the root zone lightly moist; in cooler, darker months, extend the interval.
• Substrate: Use an airy mix with fine bark, coco coir or peat-free potting base, perlite and a little mineral grit. The roots need moisture retention and oxygen at the same time.

• Feeding: Use a reduced-strength balanced houseplant fertiliser from spring to early autumn, then ease off as winter growth slows.
• Pruning: Cut back long stems above a node to encourage branching. Root healthy stem tips as cuttings.
• Repotting: Repot when the root ball has filled the pot. Choose a slightly larger container so the root zone stays evenly moist and well aerated.
