Austrocylindropuntia subulata f. cristata replaces the species’ ordinary upright columns with broad crested fans. Blue-green tissue folds into crowded ridges and irregular waves, with white areoles, strong spines and occasional awl-shaped succulent leaves emerging along the distorted growth line.
Young crests begin as small flattened sections and expand sideways as well as upwards. The ridges divide, curl and overlap, turning each plant into a different sculpted mass. Older tissue becomes firmer and may develop a woody base beneath the greener active edge. Reversion shoots sometimes return to the normal cylindrical form, making the difference between straight species growth and densely folded crest especially clear on the same specimen.
