Austrocylindropuntia subulata f. cristata is the crested form of Eve’s Needle Cactus, with thick, wavy green stems. This form grows in folded fans and ridges, while typical growth is upright and cylindrical. The surface is irregular, with small areoles, pale spines and short, narrow, awl-shaped leaves appearing on newer growth.
The crested shape comes from cristate growth, where the growing point spreads into a line instead of staying as one tip. Over time, the plant builds folds, ripples and uneven fans. Growth is slow in pots, but older plants can become broader and denser as new ridges and offsets form. Sometimes normal cylindrical shoots appear from the crest; these can be removed with clean tools if you want to keep the crested outline.
Austrocylindropuntia subulata belongs to the cactus family, Cactaceae. It is native from Peru to Bolivia, where it grows as a succulent shrub in dry shrubland and desert habitats. The usual form has cylindrical, jointed stems with raised bumps, narrow leaves on fresh growth and strong spines.
The crested form still behaves like a dryland cactus, but it grows as flattened ridges and fans. In a pot, it stays much smaller than wild plants and grows slowly. Indoors, the crested stems are the main feature; flowers are uncommon in normal homes.
Crested growth is naturally uneven. New folds may grow in different directions, and small offsets can appear along the crest. Cylindrical shoots may also appear from time to time because the plant still carries the usual growth pattern of the species.
In summer, the plant can spend time outdoors in a sheltered, bright position after gradual acclimation. Bring it indoors before nights become cold, and check between the folds for pests before moving it back into an indoor collection.
This cactus has sharp spines. Handle the pot with gloves or folded paper, and keep the plant away from children and pets because the spines can injure skin, mouths and eyes.
Austrocylindropuntia refers to South American cylindrical opuntioid cacti. The species name subulata means awl-shaped, referring to the narrow pointed leaves produced on young growth. Cristata means crested.
