Astrophytum asterias ‘Superkabuto’

A Japanese cultivar lineage of the North American star cactus

‘Superkabuto’ is a seed-propagated cultivar lineage of Astrophytum asterias, developed in Japan for exceptionally dense white flecks. It is not a single uniform clone: seedling patterns range from fine stippling to broad connected white fields.

Wild A. asterias is restricted to the lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas and north-eastern Mexico. It sits almost level with thorn-scrub ground in open stony or grassy sites, receiving intense sun and infrequent seasonal rain.

Keep Astrophytum asterias ‘Superkabuto’ upright in a shallow stable pot rather than staking it. Its spineless body is still easily bruised, and a mark in the crown remains visible as it grows.

Light

Astrophytum asterias ‘Superkabuto’ belongs on a very bright south- or west-facing windowsill, with direct sun added gradually. Introduce direct sun gradually, since the patterned surface can scorch after a sudden increase.

Watering

Water Astrophytum asterias ‘Superkabuto’ only when the entire pot is dry and the plant is in active warm growth. Apply water around the body until the root zone is evenly wet, then let every drop drain.

• The body sits low and becomes a little flatter while dry: A firm Astrophytum asterias can contract during rest. Keep it dry in cool inactive conditions and resume watering cautiously only with warmth and growth; softness is not normal resting shrinkage.
• The skin splits after a heavy watering: A very dry plant can take up water faster than its outer skin expands. Let the mix dry fully, then restart with measured watering rather than a sudden repeated soak; keep the wound clean and dry.
• A bleached corky patch forms on one side: Sunburn follows an abrupt increase in exposure. Protect it from the strongest rays and reacclimatise slowly; old scar tissue remains, so assess the unmarked new surface.
• The base softens or the plant loosens in the pot: Root or stem rot is likely. Unpot it while the damage is limited, remove every soft section and follow our root-rot guide before rerooting.

What does Astrophytum asterias mean, and who first published it?

Astrophytum means star plant, combining Greek astron, star, with phyton, plant. The epithet asterias also refers to a star, echoing the regular ribs seen from above.

Charles Lemaire established the genus Astrophytum in 1839 in Cactearum Genera et Species Novae, page 3.

Joseph Gerhard Zuccarini first described it as Echinocactus asterias in 1845 in Abhandlungen der Mathematisch-Physikalischen Classe der Königlich Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, volume 4, issue 2, page 13. Charles Lemaire later placed it in Astrophytum as Astrophytum asterias in 1868 in Cactées, page 50.
