Wild range and ornamental history of Asparagus setaceus

Asparagus setaceus is native from central Ethiopia through eastern and southern Africa, with native populations also recorded in the Comoros. Its long stems grow through and over surrounding vegetation in seasonally dry tropical regions.

The species has a long history as an ornamental and its fine green sprays are also widely used in flower arrangements.

Everyday care for Asparagus setaceus

• Humidity: Humid air with gentle airflow suits the fine foliage.
• Light: Give it bright indirect light. A sheer curtain can soften strong midday sun.
• Temperature: Around 13–21 °C suits indoor growth well.
• Watering: Check the top of the mix and water once it feels just dry while the middle of the pot is still slightly moist. Let excess water drain fully.
• Potting mix: Use a slightly acidic, rich, airy mix that holds some moisture and drains freely around the thick roots.
• Feeding: While the plant is making new stems, give a small dose of balanced houseplant feed.
• Training: Let the stems arch naturally or guide them through a light frame while they are flexible.
• Slower growth: In dimmer conditions, water less often and pause feeding until fresh shoots return.
• Repotting: Repot when roots crowd the drainage holes, the pot dries unusually fast or watering becomes difficult. The thick roots can fill a pot quickly.
• Propagation: Divide a mature clump into rooted sections, or sow cleaned seed from ripe berries.

Trouble from foliage to roots on Asparagus setaceus

• Brown crisp tips: Dry air or a dry root ball can dry the fine foliage quickly. Water the pot evenly and raise the humidity around the plant.
• Yellowing followed by shedding: Dim conditions and repeated drying can cause the fine sprays to thin out and shed. Move the plant into brighter filtered light if the spot is dim and water evenly if the mix has become dry.
• Fine webbing, tiny pale speckles or cottony clusters: Spider mites, mealybugs and aphids can hide among the fine foliage. Isolate the plant, remove visible pests and use a treatment labelled for the identified pest on ornamental plants. Repeat as directed on the label.
• Spreading leaf spots: Wet foliage and still air can encourage spotting. Cut away badly affected sprays with disinfected scissors, discard the removed foliage, clean the scissors again, water at pot level and improve gentle air movement.
• Soft roots or a collapsing base: Constantly wet roots can develop rot. With disinfected scissors, cut decayed tissue back to firm healthy tissue, discard the removed decay, clean the tool again and repot the healthy roots in fresh airy mix.

What does Asparagus setaceus mean, and who first published it?

Asparagus preserves the ancient Greek plant name asparagos. Setaceus comes from Latin saeta, a bristle, and means bristle-like.

Carl Linnaeus established the genus Asparagus in 1753 in Species Plantarum, page 313; Joseph Pitton de Tournefort had proposed the name.

Karl Sigismund Kunth first described it as Asparagopsis setacea in 1850 in Enumeratio Plantarum, volume 5, page 82. John Peter Jessop later placed it in Asparagus as Asparagus setaceus in 1966 in Bothalia, volume 9, page 51.
