Asparagus falcatus carries long sickle-shaped cladodes with a firm glossy surface and sharply tapered tips. They line tough climbing stems that become woody with age, while curved thorns at the nodes help the plant secure itself as it rises.
New growth emerges as a soft upright spear, then branches and unfurls its narrow dark green surfaces. Mature stems can travel for several metres and develop a much heavier framework than the delicate foliage suggests. Small white fragrant flowers may be followed by berries that change from green to red. Older plants combine bright flexible shoots, broad sprays of leathery cladodes and exposed woody climbing growth below them.
