Asparagus falcatus is a climbing ornamental asparagus with long stems that become woody as they mature.
Young stems are green, then become firmer and paler with age. They carry glossy, curved green cladodes with a clear central vein. Small hooked thorns appear on older growth and help the plant grip nearby plants or a trellis. Below the surface, swollen roots store water and support the long stems.
Its natural range is wide, from parts of eastern and southern Africa through the Arabian Peninsula to India and Sri Lanka. It grows along forest edges and scrub, climbing through surrounding vegetation. Indoors, give it enough space and support so the stems stay clear of nearby plants or fabric.
Mature plants can produce small white or cream flowers, sometimes with a light scent, followed by red berries. Keep berries away from pets and children. Remove fruit outdoors in warm regions where seedlings are unwanted.
Handle older stems carefully. The hooked thorns can scratch skin and catch on nearby plants or fabric. Gloves make pruning easier.
The accepted botanical name is Asparagus falcatus L., in the Asparagaceae family. The species name refers to the sickle-shaped curve of the cladodes.
