‘Sprengeri’ forms a dense crown of arching green stems, with longer shoots that hang as they lengthen. The fine green growth is made of cladodes, which function like leaves. The common “asparagus fern” name refers to its look; botanically, it is a flowering plant.
Growth comes from fibrous roots and fleshy storage tubers. As the plant ages, these roots fill the pot tightly and can push upward or make watering uneven. Above ground, the stems gradually firm up and branch, building a thick crown over time. Mature plants may produce small pale flowers tucked into the growth. Red berries can follow in suitable conditions.
The species comes from coastal and subtropical parts of southern Africa, including Mozambique and the Inhaca Islands. It grows in open, lightly shaded places with free-draining ground that still holds some moisture. Indoors, it does best in bright filtered light, with regular watering and a loose mix that does not stay wet around the roots.
Remove berries around pets or children. Outdoors in warm regions, remove them as well if you do not want seedlings.
This plant should be kept out of reach of pets and children. Plant material and berries can cause stomach upset if eaten, and repeated skin contact may irritate sensitive skin. Wear gloves if your skin reacts easily.
The accepted botanical name is Asparagus densiflorus (Kunth) Jessop, in the Asparagaceae family. The species name means “densely flowered”. ‘Sprengeri’ is the familiar cultivated name; Asparagus sprengeri is treated as a synonym rather than a separate accepted species.
