Aporocactus ‘Melanie’ develops long, narrow stems that extend outward and then curve down as they lengthen. Each stem is lined with small areoles and fine spines. As the stems lengthen, they overlap around the pot.
Mature plants can produce pink to red flowers along the stems, but this depends on age, strong light and a period of cooler, drier conditions. Younger plants and low-light plants may grow stems without producing flowers.
‘Melanie’ is a cultivated trailing cactus with long hanging stems and flowers on mature plants. Related trailing cacti grow on trees or rocky surfaces in Mexico, where water drains quickly and air reaches the roots.
New stems may start upright before bending under their own length. Give them space to hang freely rather than pressing them against walls or glass.
The small spines can irritate skin, so handle the plant with care and keep it out of reach of pets or children that might grab the stems.
