Origin of Anthurium ‘Silver Blush Mint’

‘Silver Blush Mint’ is a Dutch selection from crystallinum-type material. It was chosen for the cool green-silver wash across the centre of mature leaves and the fine green network that remains visible through the pale tissue.

Care for Anthurium ‘Silver Blush Mint’

• Give it a stable bright position: Place the plant in bright filtered light and acclimatise it gradually after a move. Protect the velvet surface from hot midday sun.
• Check moisture below the surface: Water thoroughly when the upper root zone begins to dry, then let the pot drain. The fine roots do best with light, even moisture and air around them.
• Keep the pot close to the root ball: Use small bark, coco chips or coir with pumice or perlite in a container only slightly larger than the roots. Move up a size when roots fill the pot.
• Wait for leaves to harden before cleaning: Keep water from sitting on the velvet surface and provide gentle airflow. Avoid prolonged exposure below 15 °C.

Common issues with Anthurium ‘Silver Blush Mint’

• A young leaf looks greener or bronze: The mint-silver centre becomes clearer as the leaf expands and hardens. A firm mature blade shows the final colour more clearly. Wait until the blade has fully hardened before judging its mature colour.
• A dry tan patch forms on the window-facing side: Direct sun or heat through the glass may have marked the leaf. Move the plant back or diffuse the light; the existing patch will remain.
• The green edge browns while the centre stays firm: Irregular moisture, dry air and mineral or fertiliser salts can all affect the margin. Check the root ball, stabilise watering and flush excess salts. If the air is very dry, move the plant away from drying airflow and raise the surrounding humidity. • Fresh growth opens misshapen or carries fine silvery scars: Silvery scars with black specks indicate thrips, while fine pale stippling with webbing indicates spider mites; misshapen growth alone does not confirm either pest. Isolate the plant and inspect inside the rolled leaf and along the underside for these signs. Rinse the newest growth. If thrips are confirmed, apply a treatment labelled for thrips inside the rolled leaf, along the underside and over the newest growth; if spider mites are confirmed, apply a treatment labelled for spider mites to both leaf surfaces, the rolled growth and the underside. The genus name Anthurium combines Greek anthos, “flower”, and oura, “tail”, referring to the tail-like spadix.
