Anthurium rugulosum is endemic to Ecuador, where it lives on mossy trunks and branches in wet tropical forest. Frequent rain reaches the roots and drains through bark and accumulated organic matter.

Caring for Anthurium rugulosum

• Avoid hot stagnant positions: Give it bright filtered light, humid air and gentle circulation. Protect it from heat trapped beside glass or inside an unventilated cabinet.
• Keep the root zone evenly moist with free drainage: Water as the upper mix begins to lose moisture and allow the container to drain. Repeated hard drying can mark new growth, while a constantly heavy pot deprives the roots of air.
• Choose a fine but porous mix: Small bark, chopped coco husk or coir and pumice suit the compact epiphytic roots. A ventilated pot can help in very humid conditions.
• Feed conservatively: Use a complete fertiliser at low concentration during active growth and flush the mix periodically to prevent residue build-up.

Problems to watch for on Anthurium rugulosum

• The leaf is evenly wrinkled but remains green and firm: This is the normal wrinkled surface. Irregular silvering with black specks indicates thrips, while fine pale stippling with webbing indicates spider mites; distorted new tissue alone does not confirm either pest. Leave the leaf alone when the pattern is even and the tissue stays firm. If you confirm thrips or spider mites, isolate the plant, inspect both leaf surfaces and the new growth, and rinse hardened foliage. Apply a treatment labelled for the confirmed pest to both leaf surfaces and the folded growth, then repeat it at the intervals stated on the label for the full course.
• Margins become crisp during a hot spell: Check temperature, root moisture and airflow together. Move the plant away from trapped heat and restore an even watering rhythm.
• A translucent or water-soaked patch begins to spread: Isolate the plant, keep the foliage dry and improve air movement. Remove tissue only when it is clearly soft and advancing; disinfect the tool before and after every cut.
• Lower leaves soften while the pot stays heavy: Stop watering temporarily and examine the root system. Dark, hollow or mushy roots indicate decay; remove only those failed sections, retain all firm roots and repot the healthy remainder in fresh, airy mix. What does Anthurium rugulosum mean, and who first published it?

The genus name Anthurium combines Greek anthos, “flower”, and oura, “tail”, referring to the tail-like spadix. The epithet rugulosum is Latin for finely wrinkled.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Anthurium in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 828.
