Anthurium regale × magnificum

Parentage of Anthurium regale × magnificum

Anthurium regale × A. magnificum is a horticultural hybrid between Anthurium regale from wet forest in north-eastern Peru and Anthurium magnificum Linden from wet tropical forest in Colombia. The hybrid exists only in cultivation, and individual plants vary in leaf width, vein contrast and eventual scale.

Care for Anthurium regale × magnificum

• Light and space: Place it in bright filtered light with enough room for the broad leaves to turn and expand.
• Temperature and humidity: Keep the hybrid around 20–28 °C with high humidity and gentle air movement across the broad leaves. Shield it from cold draughts and direct heat. Avoid prolonged temperatures below 15 °C.
• Water: Water thoroughly as the upper mix begins to dry, then empty all drainage water.
• Repotting and potting mix: Use a stable pot close to the root ball and an open bark-based mix with fibrous material and mineral drainage components. Repot when active roots crowd the container or the mix has broken down enough to affect drainage. Move up only slightly when the roots need more room.
• Feeding: Use a modest fertiliser dose as new leaves and roots develop. Reduce feeding as growth slows.
• New-leaf handling: Keep the plant in one position during leaf expansion and avoid handling the soft leaf.
• Acclimation: Let a newly arrived plant settle in its nursery pot until its drying rhythm is clear.
• Propagation: Use a rooted division where available, or a healthy stem or rhizome section that keeps an active growing point.

Problems affecting Anthurium regale × A. magnificum

• The first leaf after repotting is smaller: Root establishment can temporarily reduce leaf size. Keep care even and compare later growth before making another change.
• Brown edges continue onto new leaves: Irregular drying, mineral-heavy water or excess fertiliser salts can contribute. Water the full root ball evenly, flush the mix with plain water when feeding or salts may be involved, and keep the next few watering intervals consistent.
• Pale specks or scars appear along the veins: Fine pale stippling with webbing indicates spider mites, while silvery scars with black specks indicate thrips; pale marks alone do not confirm either pest. Inspect soft new growth and keep the plant separate. If you confirm spider mites or thrips, rinse hardened foliage and apply a treatment labelled for the confirmed pest to both leaf surfaces and the soft new growth. Repeat it at the intervals stated on the label for the full course.

Anthurium regale × magnificum is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.
