This terrestrial species from southern Mexico begins with simple heart-shaped juvenile foliage. Older plants can reach about 100 cm high and wide, with divided leaves occupying much more space than juvenile foliage. The mature segments are smooth, firm and slightly glossy, with visible side veins. Its dramatic transformation from simple young blades to fully fingered foliage is the main reason mature plants look so different from small specimens.
Juvenile leaves begin whole or divided into only a few broad sections. Each larger leaf develops additional narrow segments until the mature blade resembles a spread hand with many long green fingers.
