Anthurium papillilaminum is a compact velvet Anthurium from Panama with dark, matte leaves and dense crown growth. It stays fairly close to the pot, with broad leaves growing from a tight central crown.
The leaves are broadly heart-shaped, with rounded basal lobes, a clear leaf notch and a longer tip. Mature blades develop a soft, velvety, finely textured surface and usually darken as they harden. Colour can range from deep olive green to very dark green, sometimes almost black depending on the plant, leaf age and growing conditions.
Anthurium papillilaminum is native to Panama, where it grows in wet tropical conditions. Indoors, it responds best to warm roots, steady moisture, high humidity and an open substrate with enough air around the roots.
Leaf width, darkness, vein contrast and petiole colour differ between seed-grown plants and cultivated clones. Healthy roots and stable conditions usually mean larger, cleaner new leaves.
New leaves may open softer, lighter, bronze or slightly reddish before hardening darker. Established plants can also flower with a spathe and greenish spadix; dark velvet leaves dominate the plant’s appearance.
Like other Anthuriums, the plant contains calcium oxalate crystals. Keep it away from pets and children, and wash hands after pruning or repotting, especially if sap contacts the skin.
The genus name Anthurium comes from Greek roots linked to “flower” and “tail”, referring to the spadix. The epithet papillilaminum refers to papillae on the leaf blade, matching the finely textured surface of mature leaves.
