Anthurium moodeanum

Botanical origin of Anthurium moodeanum

The name Anthurium moodeanum refers to a cultivated plant whose wild origin remains uncertain.

Care for Anthurium moodeanum

• Position: Keep the plant in bright indirect light, away from hot direct sun.
• New leaves and temperature: Keep temperatures around 18–27 °C. Keep it protected when temperatures spend extended periods below 15 °C. Leave space around the opening leaf, avoid letting water sit on the soft surface and maintain consistently warm conditions with gentle air movement.
• Humidity: Aim for 50–60% humidity.
• Watering and mix: Water when the top layer has dried slightly and the pot feels lighter. Use a coarse, airy mix that retains some moisture deeper in the container and drains freely.
• Feeding: Feed the rosette lightly during active leaf and root growth. Reduce feeding as growth slows.
• Repotting: If the mix drains more slowly, replace it with fresh airy mix. Give the roots a little more room once they have filled the pot, using only a slightly larger container. If the plant is unstable, use a stable container that fits the root system.
• Propagation: For Anthurium moodeanum, propagation can begin with a rooted basal shoot or a healthy stem section that retains an active growing point.

Normal colour change and signs of stress

• A firm new leaf remains red or chocolate-brown: This can be a normal stage of development. The surface usually becomes greener and glossier as the blade hardens. Let the blade harden before judging its final colour; leave it alone while the tissue remains firm.
• A pale dry patch forms during expansion: Hot glass, strong direct light or contact with another surface may have marked the soft tissue. Move the plant away from the likely source and clear the path of the next leaf.
• Several older leaves yellow while the pot stays heavy: The root zone may be drying too slowly. Give the substrate more time between waterings and verify that drainage is free. If the stem loosens or the roots become soft, dark or foul-smelling, take the plant out of the pot, remove damaged root tissue with clean scissors and return the firm roots to fresh airy mix.

Anthurium moodeanum is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

What does Anthurium mean, and who first published it?

The genus name Anthurium combines Greek anthos, “flower”, and oura, “tail”, referring to the tail-like spadix.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Anthurium in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 828.
