Anthurium 'Dorayaki'

An Indonesian selection from crystallinum-type stock

Anthurium ‘Dorayaki’ was developed in Indonesian cultivation from Anthurium crystallinum-type material and selected for round, compact velvet leaves. A. crystallinum grows in wet tropical forest from Panama to Colombia, chiefly as an epiphyte and occasionally on the ground at lower to middle elevations. That forest background gives useful context for the cultivated line, while the individual breeder and exact parent plants of ‘Dorayaki’ remain outside the surviving public record.

Care for Anthurium ‘Dorayaki’

• Light: Place in bright filtered light. Acclimated plants can take gentle morning or evening sun; hot midday light can mark the velvet surface.
• Watering: Water when the upper 1–2 cm of substrate begins to dry. Soak the root ball evenly, drain it fully and keep the moisture rhythm steady while a leaf is expanding.
• Humidity and airflow: Aim for 65–80% relative humidity with gentle air movement. Dry water from the leaf surface promptly.
• Temperature: Keep at 20–28 °C, with the root zone above 18 °C. Protect the plant from cold glass, draughts and sudden temperature drops.
• Substrate and repotting: Treat the existing container as the reference point for Anthurium ‘Dorayaki’: observe drainage, pot weight and the response of the well-aerated root zone and emerging foliage, then schedule repotting around active roots instead of an arbitrary number of days. Later, use a pot only 2–3 cm wider and a fine, open mix of coco coir or peat, small bark and pumice or perlite.
• Feeding: Feed with a dilute complete fertiliser while the plant is producing leaves and roots. Continue at a lower rate whenever light and active growth slow, then return to the normal rate with fresh roots or a new leaf and flush the substrate with plain water every 4–6 weeks.
• Rounded leaves and propagation: Support clean expansion of the rounded leaves by keeping humidity stable and the velvet surface dry. Brush away dust gently and propagate from rooted offsets or node-bearing stem sections.

Yellow leaves, root problems and uneven new growth

• Thirst, wet roots and leaf droop: Flexible leaves plus low pot weight point to a dry root ball; soak the whole root ball and drain every excess drop. When the pot stays heavy and leaves turn soft yellow, check for root stress; delay watering and let the pot drain before checking roots. An isolated old leaf may fade as the plant redirects resources.
• Recovering an aerated root zone: Roots with a solid core can remain; root colour varies, so firmness is the useful test. Prune failed roots once texture confirms they are soft or hollow; return the remaining roots to a snug pot with a fine airy mix. Before cutting Anthurium ‘Dorayaki’, photograph the root system and confirm failure by texture; preserve every firm section, sterilise the tool between cuts and keep the crown stable while new roots develop.
• Edge browning on mature foliage: Crisp tips after a light pot can appear after an uneven watering cycle. A moist root ball with fresh brown edges calls for a water-quality and root check; flush salts when watering is due, move the plant from hot glass and inspect roots if browning continues.
• Wet-looking spots on the blade: Sun scorch, rubbing and water marks normally stop changing after the event; watch the outline before treating it. Daily movement in a wet yellow-bordered spot signals a serious problem; isolate the plant, keep foliage dry and photograph the outline each day.
• Growth slowing above damaged roots: Small or delayed leaves can appear after weak light or cool roots; compare light, root temperature and root health before changing feed. Keep the root zone warm and the foliage in bright filtered light at 20–28 °C; a fresh root or leaf shows that recovery has started; old damage stays visible.
• Weekly checks for thrips, mites and scale: A scarred opening leaf with black dots is a strong thrips clue; mites show as fine pale stippling across mature foliage. Look inside the sheath around an emerging leaf and along its underside; tiny pests and black specks are easiest to see there. Set the plant apart and apply a labelled product to dry sheaths and both leaf surfaces; keep every repeat treatment within the label directions and inspect both leaf surfaces weekly until four clean checks have passed.
• New leaves opening unevenly: A rounded leaf that catches while opening can retain a crease or uneven edge. Keep moisture and humidity steady, leave the soft blade untouched and evaluate the next leaf after conditions stabilise.

Anthurium ‘Dorayaki’: a note for pet owners

• Not pet-safe. This plant contains calcium oxalate crystals that can cause immediate pain and irritation if chewed.

The name Anthurium ‘Dorayaki’

The genus name Anthurium combines Greek anthos, “flower”, and oura, “tail”, referring to the tail-like spadix. Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Litteratur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 828.

‘Dorayaki’ refers to the round Japanese sweet made from two small pancake-like cakes. The comparison follows the cultivar’s thick, almost circular velvet leaves and compact proportions.
