Anthurium crystallinum ‘Silver’

Name and natural range of Anthurium crystallinum ‘Silver’

‘Silver’ is a horticultural name used for Anthurium crystallinum forms with unusually extensive pale venation and silvered areas. Plants carrying the name can differ in the width and coverage of their markings.

The species occurs naturally from Panama to Colombia and grows mainly as an epiphyte in wet tropical forest.

How to grow Anthurium crystallinum ‘Silver’

• Leaf care: Move the plant by its pot, support large leaves from below and blot standing water. Keep the growing point clear while a soft leaf opens.
• Light: Give bright diffused light across the plant. Keep foliage away from hot glass and strong midday sun, which can leave beige or tan scorch marks.
• Temperature and humidity: Warm conditions of 18–27 °C work well; protect from sustained exposure below 15 °C. Use a 60–80% humidity range with airflow.
• Water and potting mix: Water when the surface begins to dry, soak the root ball thoroughly and drain the pot. Use an open mix that retains light moisture around the roots.
• Repotting: Move to a slightly larger pot after active roots fill the current container.
• Feeding: Use a light feed while new foliage and roots are developing. Reduce feeding as growth slows.
• Propagation: To propagate ‘Silver’, propagation can begin with a rooted basal shoot or a healthy stem section that retains an active growing point.

When Anthurium crystallinum ‘Silver’ shows stress

• A beige or crisp patch appears on the leaf: Direct sun or heat has scorched the exposed surface. Move the plant to filtered light; the damaged area will remain visible.
• The newest leaf looks greener than expected: Young foliage may show weaker contrast, and the pattern varies naturally. Wait until the blade has fully expanded and darkened before judging it.
• Margins curl and tips brown: If the pot has become very light and the root ball is dry, water it thoroughly and shorten the next interval slightly. If a pale crust on the mix or pot rim, or repeated damage after feeding, points to mineral salts, flush the substrate once and reduce the next feed. Use lower-mineral water if the residue returns.

Anthurium crystallinum ‘Silver’ is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

Anthurium crystallinum: name and meaning

The genus name Anthurium combines Greek anthos, “flower”, and oura, “tail”, referring to the tail-like spadix. The epithet crystallinum is Latin for crystalline, referring to the bright, crystal-like leaf veins.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Anthurium in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 828.

Jean Jules Linden and Édouard-François André first described Anthurium crystallinum in 1873 in Catalogue Général, volume 90, plate 128.
