Natural range and habitat of Anthurium balaoanum

Anthurium balaoanum is native to Ecuador, where it grows on trees in wet tropical forest. Its slender stem climbs through the vegetation and anchors itself to bark with aerial roots.

Caring for Anthurium balaoanum indoors

• Provide bright indirect light: A well-lit filtered position supports firm leaves and shorter gaps between nodes. Introduce stronger light gradually after a move.
• Temperature, humidity and airflow: Keep temperatures around 18–28 °C and above 15 °C, away from cold draughts. Aim for 60–80% humidity with gentle airflow reaching the nodes and new roots.
• Water the pot and rooted support separately: Soak the root ball when the upper part begins to dry. Keep only the section of a moss-covered support reached by active roots lightly moist.
• Use a chunky potting mix: Bark, coco chips and pumice or perlite provide drainage and air around the potted roots.
• Feeding: Feed lightly while the climbing stem is extending and new roots are active. Reduce feeding as growth slows.
• Add support early: Tie the stem loosely to a pole, cork slab or plank and guide new aerial roots towards the surface. Keep ties around the stem and leave the leaf stalks free.
• Repotting with the support: Repot when roots fill the container. Lift the root ball and support together so attached aerial roots remain intact.
• Propagation: A rooted basal shoot can be separated, or a healthy stem section with an active growing point can be rooted.

Troubleshooting Anthurium balaoanum

• The stem gaps between successive leaves lengthen and the newest leaves become smaller: Move the plant gradually to brighter filtered light and use the bright indirect light guide to choose the new position. Also check that the root ball moistens evenly and keep the contact area lightly moist where aerial roots have attached to the support.
• Aerial roots dry before attaching: Moisten the point where the root touches the support and hold it gently against the surface with soft plant tape or a loose tie. Remove the tie once the root has gripped.
• Lower leaves yellow and the pot stays wet: Extend the watering interval, check that the pot drains freely and replace compacted mix if needed. Inspect the roots if yellowing spreads. If roots are dark, mushy or smell stale, remove only the failed sections, retain all firm roots and repot the healthy remainder in fresh, airy mix. • Fresh leaves carry silvery scars or black specks: Inspect the rolled leaf and leaf-stalk junctions for thrips. If you confirm thrips, isolate the plant, rinse those areas, then treat the newest leaf, petiole junctions and nearby stem with a thrips treatment suitable for houseplants. How the name Anthurium balaoanum came about

The genus name Anthurium combines Greek anthos, “flower”, and oura, “tail”, referring to the tail-like spadix. The epithet balaoanum refers to Balao in Ecuador.
