Anthurium balaoanum

A climbing epiphyte from western Ecuador

Anthurium balaoanum comes from the humid forests of western Ecuador and adjacent Colombia. It grows as an epiphyte or hemi-epiphyte, climbing tree trunks beneath a filtered canopy in warm, consistently moist conditions. Its roots encounter bark, decomposing litter and frequent rain while remaining exposed to air.

Care for Anthurium balaoanum

• Light: Give bright filtered light so the climbing stem remains compact. Acclimated leaves tolerate gentle morning or evening sun.
• Watering: Water when the surface begins to dry while the centre remains slightly moist. Soak the pot and moisten the support lightly if aerial roots are actively entering it.
• Humidity and airflow: Maintain 65–80% relative humidity with airflow along the stem, support and leaf undersides.
• Temperature: Keep at 20–28 °C and above 18 °C at night. Warm roots and a stable support encourage continuous growth.
• Substrate and repotting: Allow Anthurium balaoanum to establish a clear watering pattern in the supplied root ball, with the climbing stem and attached roots remaining firm and active; repot after the plant is stable and the next phase of root growth has begun. Repot later into a snug, stable pot with coarse bark, coco chips, coir and pumice; install the support without damaging roots.
• Feeding: Feed lightly with a complete fertiliser during stem, leaf and aerial-root growth. Flush bark-based mixes with plain water every 4–6 weeks.
• Support and propagation: Attach the elongating stem loosely to a pole or plank and keep aerial roots in contact with the support. Once established, root a node-bearing stem section for propagation.

Yellow leaves, dry roots and pests

• Moisture-related leaf decline: Shrivelled aerial roots, a dry support and a light pot point to thirst; wet the root ball and the parts of the support carrying roots. Soft yellow leaves with a heavy damp base indicate root stress, especially when attached roots have darkened.
• When roots turn soft or hollow: Firm aerial roots should grip the support as well as enter the pot. Trim only hollow or slippery tissue with a sharp blade sterilised in advance, stabilise the base in a coarse open mix and press active root tips gently against the support. Before cutting Anthurium balaoanum, photograph the root system and confirm failure by texture; preserve every firm section, sterilise the tool between cuts and keep the crown stable while new roots develop.
• Minerals, roots and brown tips: Brown tips can be caused by rapid drying at the support, salts or dry air around exposed roots. Check pot and support separately, flush the root zone and moisten only areas carrying active roots.
• A bruise, scorch mark or active lesion: Dry rub marks form where leaves press against a support or wall. Isolate the plant if a spot is wet, yellow-edged or enlarging; keep foliage dry and photograph the edge daily.
• Weak light, cool roots and delay: A loose stem and dry aerial-root tips can stop vertical growth even in useful light. Keep bright filtered light and 20–28 °C, loosen tight ties and restore moisture only where roots are attached.
• Scale, mealybugs and soft-leaf pests: Mealybugs and scale hide where aerial roots meet the stem, while thrips feed inside opening leaves. Examine closely nodes, root junctions and lower leaf surfaces. Isolate, remove visible pests, treat every occupied junction with a labelled product and follow the label interval with weekly checks for four weeks.
• Dry or detached aerial roots: Dry active root tips and a loose stem slow vertical growth. Keep the support lightly moist only where roots touch it and loosen any tie that presses into the stem.

Anthurium balaoanum and pet safety

• Not pet-safe. This plant contains calcium oxalate crystals that can cause immediate pain and irritation if chewed.

The name Anthurium balaoanum

The genus name Anthurium combines Greek anthos, “flower”, and oura, “tail”, referring to the tail-like spadix. Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Litteratur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 828.

Balaoanum refers to Balao in Ecuador, the locality connected with the type material. That Ecuadorian place gives the epithet its geographical meaning and is distinct from Balaoan in the Philippines. Adolf Engler described Anthurium balaoanum in 1898 in Botanische Jahrbücher für Systematik 25: 432.
