Aloe dorotheae ‘Crimson’

A red trade form of a Tanzanian rock-dwelling aloe

‘Crimson’ is a horticultural label used for Aloe dorotheae plants selected or propagated for strong red foliage. No breeder, original selector or formal cultivar description is documented with the name, so it should not be treated as one proven clone.

Wild A. dorotheae is restricted to rocky outcrops in north-eastern Tanzania. Summer rain alternates with a pronounced dry period, and roots occupy shallow pockets between exposed stones. The glossy spotted leaves can turn strongly red under bright, dry conditions even in the species itself.

How to care for Aloe dorotheae ‘Crimson’

Light

Give Aloe dorotheae ‘Crimson’ a bright south, west or east window and introduce direct sun gradually. Useful sun keeps the spreading rosettes low and brings out their natural crimson tones. In weak light, leaves become greener, longer and more widely spaced; scorching glass can leave permanent tan scars. Red colour may vary with light and water status, but it is not Panaschierung and should not be forced through severe stress.

Watering

Water Aloe dorotheae ‘Crimson’ only after the substrate has dried well down the pot, then wet the complete root system and remove runoff. The succulent leaves tolerate a clear dry phase, although an actively spreading clump should not be left desiccated for many weeks. Constant moisture at the stem bases causes decline. Strong light, heat and multiple rosettes speed use, while cool shade and a generous container slow drying substantially.

Substrate and roots

Aloe dorotheae ‘Crimson’ needs a fast-draining mineral blend that remains open beneath a widening clump. Combine quality cactus mix with generous pumice, lava or grit; avoid fine sand, heavy compost and blocked decorative containers. Its fleshy roots spread around several short stems and fail in a compact wet core. Maintain each rosette at its old level, leave the drainage hole clear and use plain-water soakings to prevent fertiliser residue from concentrating.

Temperature

Keep Aloe dorotheae ‘Crimson’ at about 16–30 °C and above roughly 10–12 °C. Cool conditions are acceptable only with a dry, airy root zone. Wet rosette bases combined with cold can decline quickly. Move the plant away from winter panes, exterior-door draughts and air-conditioning. A heater under the sill can bake one side of a broad clump, so aim for gradual day-to-night temperature changes.

Humidity and airflow

Aloe dorotheae ‘Crimson’ suits average to dry household air. Higher humidity does not improve its crimson rosettes and may slow the evaporation needed around their short stems. Gentle circulation through a spreading clump is helpful, especially during cool weather. Routine misting offers no benefit and can leave water lodged between leaves. Rinse dust only when the plant can dry fully before night, and keep it away from direct heater blasts.

Fertilising

Apply a balanced cactus feed to Aloe dorotheae ‘Crimson’ at roughly quarter strength every four to six weeks during active spreading growth. Continue lightly at any time of year when strong light and warmth keep new leaves moving; pause when the clump is cool and dry. Fertiliser does not create crimson colour, and excess nitrogen weakens the rosettes. Feed a damp root zone and flush residual salts through the pot regularly.

Repotting

Aloe dorotheae ‘Crimson’ needs fresh mix once its spreading rosettes crowd the edge, roots block drainage or water follows fixed channels. Increase pot width by 3–4 cm without adding unnecessary depth. The roots tolerate careful division during warm growth, but each separated rosette should carry its own sound roots. Preserve the main root ball, keep stem bases at surface level and delay a full soak if cuts or roots were damaged.

Support, pruning, handling and leaf care

Aloe dorotheae ‘Crimson’ spreads by basal shoots and can lean as the clump broadens. Strong light keeps the growth compact; prune only damaged rosettes or divide rooted outer shoots for size control. Let the spreading rosettes support one another in a broad pot rather than tying them. Prune a damaged rosette at its base or divide a rooted outer shoot. Handle the container, not the red leaves, and rinse gently without leaving water trapped in the clump.

Crimson colour, scorch or watering stress?

• The whole rosette turns red-orange in bright light: Strong crimson pigmentation is the feature this red trade form is grown for. It is normal while leaves remain plump and firm; the same plant may look greener in lower light or after a change in season.
• Pale beige patches appear within the red surface: This is sun scorch, especially if the plant was moved abruptly. Pull it back from the strongest exposure and reacclimatise slowly; damaged areas will not recolour, so watch the new centre leaves.
• Leaves redden, thin and curl inward: Colour alone is harmless, but loss of firmness means the plant is using stored water. If the mix is dry, soak and drain it; if it is damp, inspect the roots because decay can produce the same dehydrated look.
• The centre turns glassy or detaches: Water or cold has damaged the crown. Remove soft tissue with a sterile blade, keep the remaining plant dry and warm, and save firm offsets separately if the central stem continues to decay.

Pet Safety

The effects of eating Aloe dorotheae ‘Crimson’ have not been established in cats or dogs. Do not allow pets to chew it: related aloes may contain irritating leaf-latex compounds, and the toothed leaf margins can also scratch the mouth or skin. Contact a veterinarian if a significant amount is swallowed or symptoms develop.

Dorothy Westhead and the trade name ‘Crimson’

Alwin Berger published Aloe dorotheae in 1908 and named it for Dorothy Westhead of London. The ending -ae is the Latin form traditionally used for a dedication to a woman.

‘Crimson’ is a commercial name referring to the rich red colour the leaves can develop. Its original selector and status as a single cultivar clone are not documented.
