Alocasia ‘Portora’

Breeding and origin of Alocasia ‘Portora’

Alocasia ‘Portora’ was created by LariAnn Garner at Aroidia Research from Alocasia odora × Alocasia portei. Alocasia odora is native across parts of southern and eastern Asia. Its Alocasia portei parent is endemic to Luzon in the Philippines and occurs in secondary forest from low to middle elevations. Both parents occur in warm, seasonally wet climates.

Growing Alocasia ‘Portora’

Space: ‘Portora’ can become very large and upright. Give it more room for height and width as it grows, and use a heavier pot before it becomes top-heavy.

Light: For strong growth, place ‘Portora’ in plenty of filtered light and add stronger sun only gradually.

Watering: During active growth, check deeper in the pot and water as those deeper sections begin to lose moisture, before they dry completely. If growth slows and the pot dries more slowly, wait longer between waterings. Water the root ball evenly and let the pot drain freely before emptying the saucer or outer pot.

Potting mix: A large, actively growing ‘Portora’ does well in a fertile mix that stays loose even when you water often.

Temperature: ‘Portora’ grows steadily at about 18–30 °C. Relocate it from colder positions before temperatures settle below 15 °C.

Humidity: Aim for 60–70% humidity, with gentle airflow.

Feeding: During strong leaf growth, use a complete houseplant fertiliser at modest strength. A period of strong growth can take slightly more frequent feeding. Pause further feeding when growth becomes sluggish.

Repotting: Increase pot size only after the root system has filled the container, keeping the change small.

Propagation: Use a well-rooted basal offset, separating it with its roots intact. Move the offset into a separate pot and maintain steady warmth during establishment.

Sagging lower foliage, scorched blades and progressively smaller leaves

• Lower leaves yellow and sag while the pot stays wet: A large pot can remain moist well below the surface after the top starts to feel drier. Give it more time before watering again and inspect the roots if the plant continues to weaken or the base starts to soften. If you find decay, follow our root-rot guide.
• Broad pale or brown patches appear on the window-facing leaves: Sudden strong sun can scorch a plant that was growing in softer light. Move ‘Portora’ away from harsh midday exposure and increase light more gradually. A scorched patch will remain, but later leaves should stay clear if light was the cause.
• Each new leaf is noticeably smaller than the one before: One smaller leaf after transport or a seasonal change is not usually a concern. If the trend continues, check that the plant still has enough light and warmth and that the roots are healthy before increasing fertiliser.

Alocasia ‘Portora’: toxic if chewed

• Pets: This Alocasia is toxic to cats and dogs. Keep the plant and any cut pieces where pets cannot chew them.
• Children and handling: Keep it out of reach of children. Sap from damaged tissue can irritate skin and eyes, so wash your hands after pruning and avoid touching your face.
• Why it irritates: Alocasia tissue contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. Chewing or contact with sensitive tissue can cause immediate local irritation.
• Possible symptoms: Mouth exposure can cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, nausea or vomiting, and difficulty swallowing.
• After exposure: For a pet, contact a veterinarian. For a person, remove any plant material from the mouth and rinse with water; seek medical or poison-control advice if symptoms are significant. Breathing difficulty or rapidly increasing swelling needs urgent medical attention.

The name behind Alocasia ‘Portora’

Portora blends the parent names portei and odora. Portei honours Marius Porte, and odora means “fragrant”.

LariAnn Garner created the Alocasia odora × Alocasia portei cross. The green-petioled, green-veined selection from this cross is the cultivar ‘Portora’.
