Origin and background of Alocasia ‘Portora’

Alocasia ‘Portora’ was created by LariAnn Garner at Aroidia Research from Alocasia odora × Alocasia portei. Alocasia odora is native across parts of southern and eastern Asia. Alocasia portei is endemic to Luzon in the Philippines, where it grows in secondary forest at low to middle elevations. Both parents occur in warm, seasonally wet climates. Indoors, ‘Portora’ grows best with steady warmth, elevated humidity and regular moisture around an airy root zone.

How to care for Alocasia ‘Portora’

• Light: Provide bright, indirect light around 10,000–20,000 lux. Acclimate the plant gradually to gentle morning or late-afternoon sun when growing it outdoors.
• Space: Allow generous height and width from the start, as this vigorous hybrid develops a substantial crown and very large leaves.
• Watering: Water when roughly 40–60% of the substrate has dried. Check moisture deeper in a large pot, water the root ball evenly and let excess water drain fully.
• Humidity: Aim for 60–70% humidity with steady air movement. Stable conditions help the large leaf area remain hydrated.
• Temperature: Keep the plant between 18–30°C and protect it from temperatures below 15°C. Warm, stable conditions support active leaf and root growth.
• Substrate: Use a rich, moisture-buffering mix with bark, perlite or another coarse component that preserves airflow around the roots.
• Repotting: Repot when roots fill the available space, drainage slows or the mix loses structure. Increase the pot by one modest size.
• Feeding: Apply a diluted complete fertiliser regularly during active growth, then reduce applications when leaf and root growth slow.
• Handling: Protect the broad corrugated leaves from strong draughts and frequent contact, which can tear the margins or crease the petioles.
• Stability: Use a stable outer pot once the crown becomes top-heavy.
• Propagation: Propagate established plants through offsets or rhizome division. Keep fresh divisions warm during new root development.

Troubleshooting Alocasia ‘Portora’

• Yellowing or wilting in persistently wet substrate: A large crown can make the plant look ready for a bigger pot before its roots have filled the current one. Excess wet mix around a smaller root ball may become oxygen-poor. Check for brown, soft roots, remove decayed tissue and repot in fresh, airy mix using a pot that fits the remaining roots. • Split leaves or sharply creased petioles: Broad waved leaves catch moving air and are easily damaged by contact. Move the plant away from strong draughts, leave room for each new leaf to open and keep the pot stable. • Several leaves yellow after a cold spell: Chilled foliage and roots use water slowly, so the substrate may stay wet much longer. Move the plant away from cold glass and temperature swings, keep it consistently warm and wait for the root zone to reach the usual watering trigger. • All parts contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.

Names and origin of Alocasia ‘Portora’

Alocasia combines the Greek prefix a-, meaning “without” or “lacking”, with Colocasia, the name of a related aroid genus.

The formal botanical citation is Alocasia (Schott) G.Don. George Don established the genus at that rank in 1839 in Hortus Britannicus, edition 3, page 631.

LariAnn Garner created the Alocasia odora × Alocasia portei cross. The commonly cultivated green-petioled, green-veined selection is ‘Portora’. She reserved ‘Thunder Waves’ for the corresponding red or maroon selection, whose entry into commerce remains uncertain.

‘Portodora’ is an incorrect trade spelling; ‘Portora’ is the documented cultivar name.
