Alocasia ‘Polly’ Albo/Pink Variegata is a variegated mutation from the ‘Polly’ cultivar line. ‘Polly’ itself originated as a compact tissue-culture mutation of the historic hybrid ‘Amazonica’.

The same ‘Polly’ lineage sits behind the variegation: damp Philippine ravine forest through Alocasia sanderiana, and a much wider range of humid, sometimes rocky or swampy natural sites through Alocasia longiloba. The white and pink sectors are horticultural mutations.

Care for variegated corm-forming aroids

• Light: Give Alocasia ‘Polly’ Albo/ Pink Variegata bright filtered light. Pale areas scorch first, so increase light gradually.
• Watering: Water as the surface begins to dry. Small root balls dry quickly, but corms should never sit in soggy mix or standing water.
• Humidity and airflow: Aim for moderate to high humidity with gentle airflow. Avoid cold draughts and direct fans.
• Substrate and repotting: Let a new plant settle in its nursery pot. Later, choose a pot only slightly larger than the root system.
• Feeding: Use a complete fertiliser at a low dose sparingly while growth is active. Feed less often when growth or available light decreases.
• Leaf care: Wipe from the midrib outwards while supporting the leaf. Do not press into raised veins; check recessed areas for mites.

• Drying advances from a tip or pale margin: White or cream sectors can fail before the green portions of the same leaf. Compare white sectors with adjacent green tissue, then inspect root moisture, salt residue and direct heated airflow. Correct uneven moisture and any visible salt crust, keeping firm pale sections while the next leaf develops. Judge recovery from healthy new growth.
• A new leaf opens with silver scars and black specks: Inspect the rolled blade, pale folds and petiole sheath for repeated feeding marks or dark deposits. Inspect concealed new growth and the underside. Rough repeated silver marks with dark specks support thrips; one clean crease is more consistent with rubbing. Keep the plant apart and treat concealed folds only when insects, dark deposits or characteristic silver feeding scars support thrips.
• Check for uneven moisture, before correcting the root ball: Probe the centre and outer edge of the plant's root ball after watering. Water that escapes around a dry core, or a wet compact centre surrounded by drier mix, can produce conflicting symptoms across the pale sectors in a compact crown. Rewet a dry pocket slowly and drain the pot fully. If the centre remains saturated, do not water again until the pot feels lighter and moisture at depth has fallen. Do not apply the same watering response to both conditions.
