Alocasia odora variegata 'Batik' is a variegated form of the broad-leaved Alocasia odora, with large peltate blades and fine pale patterning across green tissue. Its variegation can appear as marbling, broken lines and irregular pale sections.
The plant keeps the upright tropical growth of Alocasia odora: long petioles, leaves clustered near the stem tip and a thick base that prefers warm, evenly moist conditions. Each leaf can carry a slightly different pattern as the plant moves from juvenile to larger growth.
Alocasia odora is an accepted species in the Araceae, native from eastern India through parts of tropical and subtropical Asia to Borneo. The species is associated with warm rainforest, riverbank, swamp and limestone-influenced habitats. In this variegated plant, the broad peltate blades and upright stem-forming growth shape its indoor care needs.
Alocasia odora variegata 'Batik' contains irritating calcium oxalate crystals. Keep it away from pets and children, and avoid contact with sap from cut or damaged tissue.
The genus name Alocasia comes from Greek a-, meaning not or without, and Colocasia, a related aroid genus. The species epithet odora means fragrant, referring to the scented inflorescences of the species. In the variegated 'Batik' plant, fine pale patterning appears across the broad peltate leaf shape of Alocasia odora.
