‘Batik’ is a variegated form of Alocasia odora. The species ranges from eastern India through East and Southeast Asia to southern Japan and Borneo. About the name Alocasia odora

Alocasia combines the Greek prefix a-, meaning “without” or “lacking”, with Colocasia, the name of a related aroid genus. Odora means “fragrant” in Latin.

The formal botanical citation is Alocasia (Schott) G.Don. George Don established the genus at that rank in 1839 in Hortus Britannicus, edition 3, page 631.

George Loddiges first described it as Arum odorum in 1820 in The Botanical Cabinet, volume 5, plate 416. Édouard Spach later placed it in Alocasia as Alocasia odora in 1846 in Histoire Naturelle des Végétaux, volume 12, page 46.
