‘Silver Black Diamond’ belongs to Alocasia nebula, a species known from Sarawak on Borneo. Alocasia nebula may grow in lowland limestone forest near Semenggoh. Its exact habitat is unknown. Give it subdued light and keep the air warm and humid. Use a fine, mineral-rich mix and keep it evenly moist.

• Light: Provide bright, filtered light throughout the day. Direct sunlight can bleach or scorch the silvered, heavily textured foliage.

• Grey-green tissue with darker veins: This reverse contrast is part of the plant’s normal colouring. Where does the name Alocasia nebula come from?

Alocasia combines the Greek prefix a-, meaning “without” or “lacking”, with Colocasia, the name of a related aroid genus. Nebula is Latin for “mist” or “cloud”, matching the clouded leaf colouring.

The formal botanical citation is Alocasia (Schott) G.Don. George Don established the genus at that rank in 1839 in Hortus Britannicus, edition 3, page 631.
