Alocasia 'Lukiwan' (alba × sinuata)

Alocasia 'Lukiwan' is a cultivated hybrid between Alocasia alba and Alocasia sinuata, created by Wawan Santoso. It combines broad green blades with a raised, bullate surface.

Firm petioles hold the leaves upright above the pot, and mature blades become more puckered as they harden. Indoors, it usually keeps an upright shape rather than spreading far over the pot edge.

The leaves show both parents without looking exactly like either one: Alocasia alba gives width, while Alocasia sinuata gives the puckered surface and firm leaf texture.

Keep the substrate warm and lightly moist while new leaves open. A chunky mix is important because dense wet soil can damage the roots and soften the rhizome.

Lukiwan care for broad textured leaves

• Light: Bright indirect light gives the plant the light it needs to make broader leaves. In low light, new leaves often stay smaller or petioles stretch.
• Water: Allow the upper few centimetres of substrate to start drying, then water thoroughly and drain away excess water. Constantly wet mix can soften the rhizome.
• Substrate: Use a chunky mix with bark, coco chips, perlite, pumice or lava. Air around the roots lowers the risk of rot in wet soil.
• Humidity: Keep humidity around 60% or higher while new textured leaves are opening.
• Temperature: Keep the roots warm, ideally around 20–28 °C. Cold substrate after watering can soften petioles and slow water uptake.
• Feeding: Feed lightly once new growth starts. Smaller leaves during active growth can point to weak feeding, low light or crowded roots.
• Potting: Choose a pot with drainage and move up gradually once the roots have filled the current container. Oversized pots can hold wet mix around the rhizome.
• Propagation: Corms, offsets or rhizome divisions can be separated once they have active roots and at least one firm new leaf.

• Soft base or loose petioles: Check the roots, drainage and substrate temperature.
• Brown marks in leaf folds: Reduce water sitting on the leaf surface and improve airflow around the plant.
• Small new leaves: Check light, root space and feeding if fresh leaves repeatedly stay small.
• Fine speckling: Inspect the undersides and raised areas for spider mites before damage spreads.

Safe placement for Lukiwan

Alocasia 'Lukiwan' is not pet-safe. The plant contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that can irritate the mouth, tongue and throat if ingested. Wash your hands after handling cut or damaged tissue.

Lukiwan hybrid background

Alocasia belongs to the family Araceae. The genus name combines Greek a-, meaning apart from, with Colocasia, a closely related aroid genus. The cultivar name 'Lukiwan' combines parts of the names Luki Ani and Wawan.
