Aglaonema ‘Vanilla Baby’

Origin of Aglaonema ‘Vanilla Baby’

‘Vanilla Baby’ is a cultivated Aglaonema selection. Aglaonema species are native across tropical and subtropical Asia to New Guinea.

Growing Aglaonema ‘Vanilla Baby’ well

• Light: Give the pale leaves bright indirect light and keep them away from hot direct sun.
• Water and temperature: Water after roughly half of the potting mix has dried, then drain thoroughly. Warm conditions around 18–27 °C suit growth; protect the plant from cold draughts and temperatures below 15 °C.
• Humidity: Keep moisture in the air around 50–60% around the foliage.
• Pot and potting mix: Use a pot that fits the root ball closely. Move up only one container size once roots have filled the current pot, using a loose mix that drains freely but does not dry out immediately.
• Feeding and division: Apply a low-strength feed while new leaves are growing. A crowded plant can be divided by separating rooted shoots that form at the base.

Problems to watch for on Aglaonema ‘Vanilla Baby’

• Yellow lower leaves: Soft yellow lower foliage with a pot that remains heavy suggests that the root zone is staying wet for too long. Extend the interval and confirm that excess water can escape. If leaf loss carries on, inspect the roots and remove only genuinely soft decayed tissue before repotting in a fresh airy mix when needed.
• Smaller new leaves: New leaves that are a little smaller do not automatically mean the plant needs more fertiliser. Move a chilled plant into stable warmth or a dim plant gradually into brighter indirect light first. Increase feed only after the roots are healthy and active growth has resumed.
• Dry pale patches: Cream or tan damage on the lightest tissue may follow a strong sun exposure or a major dry-down. Reduce direct exposure if the marks followed brighter light; if the root ball became very dry, rewet it evenly. The damaged section will stay marked, so judge the correction from subsequent leaves.
• Spider mites or mealybugs: Fine pale stippling with webbing indicates spider mites, while cottony or waxy deposits indicate mealybugs; the tight centre and petiole bases can shelter both pests. If you confirm spider mites or mealybugs, isolate the plant, clear away insects you can see and rinse both surfaces of accessible leaves. Apply a treatment labelled for the confirmed pest to the tight centre, petiole bases and leaf undersides. Repeat it at the intervals stated on the label for the full course and keep checking new growth.

Aglaonema ‘Vanilla Baby’ is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

What does the name Aglaonema mean?

Aglaonema combines Greek aglaos, meaning shining or splendid, with nema, meaning thread or filament.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Aglaonema in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 1829, page 892.
