Aglaonema ‘Matcha Lemon’ is known as a horticultural selection with blended matcha and lemon colouring. The name carries no breeder or parent information, and no one has established where the line originated or when it entered cultivation. Its appearance cannot reveal which wild species contributed to it or which natural habitat lies behind the line.

Care for compact Aglaonema ‘Matcha Lemon’

• Light: Keep the creamy matcha-and-lemon foliage in bright indirect light. The compact crown can sit closer to a window, provided hot direct rays do not strike the blades. A slower drying pot is the first practical sign that the position has become too dim for the amount of water being supplied.
• Watering: Use the weight of the whole pot together with a finger check below the surface. Compact clumps may stay wet around the central stems after the top has dried. Water thoroughly when the root ball is ready, then allow free drainage and keep the cover pot empty.
• Temperature, humidity and airflow: Keep it at 18–27 °C and above 15 °C. Around 45–60% humidity is normally enough. If humidity stays below about 40% and edges keep drying, move the plant away from heating or use a humidifier. Normal room airflow is enough; avoid cold draughts and direct fan or radiator air.
• Feeding: Use a complete houseplant fertiliser at a low dose every three to four waterings during active growth. Feed less often whenever growth slows, regardless of the season, and never fertilise a dry root ball or a stressed plant.
• Substrate and repotting: Use coco coir or peat, small bark and perlite or pumice in a draining pot. Let a newly delivered plant settle before changing its pot or substrate. Repot when roots fill the container or the mix compacts, using a pot only slightly larger than the root system.
• Leaf care: Wipe the broad leaves individually and keep the yellow-green petiole bases clear of loose dead material. Look into the compact centre for mealybugs, scale and moisture trapped between overlapping leaves.
• Propagation: Separate a rooted side shoot when the clump offers a natural division. A cane section with at least one firm node can be rooted in a small pot of warm, lightly moist mix and moved into brighter filtered light after growth resumes.

Scorched or curled pale leaves on Aglaonema ‘Matcha Lemon’

• Scorch: Dry pale patches limited to the window-facing side are typical of direct sun or heat. Move the plant into filtered light; the sunburn guide helps confirm the distribution.

• Brown tips: Check for uneven drying, airflow from a radiator and fertiliser deposits. Flush salts only when the root zone is healthy and not already saturated.
• Pests: Look directly for black thrips specks, fine webbing, sticky residue or raised insects, since the pale pattern can conceal colour changes.

Pet safety: Aglaonema ‘Matcha Lemon’

Aglaonema ‘Matcha Lemon’ is not pet-safe. Aglaonema contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause immediate mouth pain and irritation, swelling of the mouth, tongue or lips, drooling, vomiting and difficulty swallowing if chewed. Sap may also irritate skin and eyes.

The genus name explained for ‘Matcha Lemon’

Aglaonema combines Greek aglaos, meaning shining or splendid, with nema, meaning thread or filament. Botanist Dan H. Nicolson rendered the resulting name as “shining stamen” in his monograph of the genus. Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established Aglaonema on 8 September 1829 on page 892 of issue 108 of Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Litteratur, Theater und Mode.
