Aglaonema ‘Ghost’

A pale cultivar known only from cultivation

Aglaonema ‘Ghost’ is a cultivated line with cream, silver and grey-green foliage. No origin story identifying a breeder, parent plants, selection location or release date is known. The cultivar has no wild locality of its own, and its untraced ancestry gives no sound basis for assigning it to the habitat of any one Aglaonema species.

Care for the washed silver foliage of Aglaonema ‘Ghost’

• Light: Give the silvery leaves bright filtered light so the plant can maintain steady growth. A dark position reduces the rate at which the root ball dries, while direct rays can leave tan patches across the chalky surface. Move between light levels in stages, especially after transport or winter.
• Watering: Check the pot by weight and test below the dry-looking surface before watering. The pale foliage may stay firm while the lower mix is still wet, so the root ball is the useful guide. Once it feels clearly lighter, soak evenly, let all excess escape and empty the cover pot.
• Temperature, humidity and airflow: Keep it at 18–27 °C and above 15 °C. Around 45–60% humidity is normally enough. If humidity stays below about 40% and edges keep drying, move the plant away from heating or use a humidifier. Normal room airflow is enough; avoid cold draughts and direct fan or radiator air.
• Feeding: Use a complete houseplant fertiliser at a low dose every three to four waterings during active growth. Feed less often whenever growth slows, regardless of the season, and never fertilise a dry root ball or a stressed plant.
• Substrate and repotting: Use coco coir or peat, small bark and perlite or pumice in a draining pot. Let a newly delivered plant settle before changing its pot or substrate. Repot when roots fill the container or the mix compacts, using a pot only slightly larger than the root system.
• Leaf care: Dust is easy to see on the grey-green blades. Wipe gently with a damp cloth, inspect the undersides at the same time and keep water from collecting between the closely grouped leaf bases.
• Propagation: Divide a rooted shoot when the plant already has several stems. Cane pieces also root from healthy nodes in warm airy substrate; keep the moisture even and use gentle filtered light until each section produces active growth.

Brown spots and distorted new leaves on Aglaonema ‘Ghost’

• Brown spots: Mark the edge of a suspicious patch. A dry mark that remains unchanged is old damage; a soft area that expands needs dry leaves, separation from other plants and removal with clean tools once its cause is established.
• Curled new leaves: Review moisture and temperature during the period when the leaf formed, then inspect distorted new leaves for thrips or mites. The new-leaf guide explains when to leave them alone. Do not try to pull a leaf open by hand.
• Wilting in wet mix: Yellowing, a loose base or a sour smell indicates damaged roots. Check the lower root ball and stem base first, and disturb the plant only when softness, dark roots or a sour smell confirms active decay. If the lower root ball confirms decay, remove soft dark roots and use a pot only slightly larger than the healthy root system.
• Pests: On pale leaves, look directly for black thrips specks, webbing or raised insects, since colour change is harder to read on the pale surface. Check the undersides and petiole bases carefully.

Pet safety: Aglaonema ‘Ghost’

Aglaonema ‘Ghost’ is not pet-safe. Aglaonema contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause immediate mouth pain and irritation, swelling of the mouth, tongue or lips, drooling, vomiting and difficulty swallowing if chewed. Sap may also irritate skin and eyes.

The name Aglaonema behind ‘Ghost’

Aglaonema combines Greek aglaos, meaning shining or splendid, with nema, meaning thread or filament. Botanist Dan H. Nicolson rendered the resulting name as “shining stamen” in his monograph of the genus. Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established Aglaonema on 8 September 1829 on page 892 of issue 108 of Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Litteratur, Theater und Mode.
