Zingiber malaysianum 'Chocolate' is a compact tropical ginger with lush, glossy foliage and a rich, earthy colour that gives it both ornamental and exotic appeal. The deep burgundy to chocolate-brown leaves emerge from short upright stems, with new growth often flushed with green before maturing into its full dark tone. Each leaf is long, slightly arching, and marked by fine parallel veins typical of Zingiber species. The plant grows in neat clusters and can produce cone-like bracts from the base, though the foliage remains the main attraction in indoor settings. With its warm tones and manageable size, this is a ginger you grow for the leaves.
This cultivar is derived from Zingiber malaysianum, a species native to the shaded, humid rainforests of Peninsular Malaysia. There, it thrives in loose, organic-rich soils beneath dense canopies where light is diffuse, temperatures average 25 – 30 °C, and humidity stays above 75% throughout the year. While wild plants produce both foliage and inflorescences, the 'Chocolate' form is grown mainly for its uniquely coloured leaves.
Zingiber malaysianum 'Chocolate' grows from a fleshy rhizome and maintains a dense, non-invasive clump. It’s non-toxic and safe for households with pets, making it even more appealing as an indoor ornamental species.
This is a species that appreciates stability. Avoid moving it frequently, and try to maintain consistent watering and temperature routines. While it may rarely flower indoors, the foliage alone makes it worth growing. Zingiber malaysianum 'Chocolate' does especially well when its natural rainforest conditions are mimicked – warmth, filtered light, and moisture-rich soil. As the plant matures, it may even develop short basal blooms if kept content year-round.
The genus name Zingiber comes from the Sanskrit “śṛṅgavera,” meaning “horn-shaped,” referencing the rhizome form. The species name malaysianum refers to its origin in Malaysia. The plant belongs to the Zingiberaceae (ginger) family, known for both edible and ornamental species. The cultivar name 'Chocolate' describes the foliage’s deep, earthy colouration, which is a result of selective breeding.
