Pinus pinea, the stone pine, is native from southern Europe across the Mediterranean to the eastern Mediterranean and Lebanon. It belongs to landscapes with intense sun, dry summers, mild wetter winters and well-drained sandy or rocky ground. Mature umbrella-shaped trees have been part of Mediterranean food and cultural landscapes for centuries because their large seeds are the familiar pine nuts.

‘Silver Crest’ is the horticultural name used for compact stone pines in their blue-grey juvenile phase. These short silvery needles are a normal feature of young P. pinea; darker green needles in pairs begin appearing as the tree ages. The name does not indicate that the tree will remain permanently dwarf or keep its juvenile silver foliage for life.

• Temperature: Limit time indoors to 7–10 days in bright, cool conditions. Move the tree gradually between protected and fully outdoor temperatures after the display.

• Silver colour fading: Paired dark-green adult needles naturally replace the single silvery juvenile needles as stone pine matures. This change is not a nutrient deficiency.
• Long weak indoor shoots: Warmth combined with poor winter light produces stretched growth that will not become compact later. Move the tree gradually back to bright, cool outdoor conditions.
• Brown needle tips: Root-ball drought, accumulated salts and cold root injury are possible. Check moisture throughout the small pot before adding water or feed.
• General dulling and collapse: A cold waterlogged root ball is the main concern. Empty trapped water, protect the container from extreme cold and restore drainage.
• Stippling or webbing: Spider mites are favoured by warm dry rooms. Isolate the pine and use a treatment intended for mites after confirming them on the needles.
• Resin and bark: A few resin beads after minor damage can be normal. Flow from a sunken bark lesion or alongside spreading dieback is more concerning; seek local conifer advice if it continues.
• Outdoor pests and disease: Fixed bumps indicate scale, aphids gather on young shoots and caterpillars chew needles. Spreading needle spots or dying shoot tips may indicate disease; identify the cause before treatment.
• Central shoot damage: Do not cut out the upright central shoot in response to indoor stretching. Removing it permanently changes the tree’s future shape.
