Vermiculite – moisture-holding mineral for starter mixes

Vermiculite is best understood as a moisture-buffering material. It helps keep small roots evenly supplied with water, especially in propagation trays and delicate tropical blends.

Mixing guide

Moisture retention: holds water inside the mix
Fine-root contact: useful for seedlings and cuttings
Lightweight mineral: easy to blend through soft substrates
Use sparingly: too much can slow drying

How to blend it

Use it with seeding soil, coco coir or other fine base materials where roots need close contact. It can also help soften mixes that dry too sharply in small pots.

A high vermiculite share can make a substrate stay damp for too long. Keep the proportion modest and choose a different mineral for faster dry-down.

What is vermiculite best used for?

Is vermiculite the same as perlite?

No. Vermiculite holds more water, while perlite mainly adds air space and lightens a mix.

Should I use vermiculite for cacti and succulents?

Usually only in very small amounts, if at all. Most cacti and succulents need faster dry-down, not extra moisture retention.
