Tradescantia spathacea 'Sitara Gold'

Origin of Tradescantia spathacea 'Sitara Gold'

‘Sitara Gold’ is a cultivated selection of Tradescantia spathacea. The species occurs naturally from southern Mexico to Guatemala, where it forms upright rosettes on the floor of wet tropical habitats.

The species develops in year-round warmth with humid air, bright filtered light and regular rainfall. Roots remain in freely draining ground. Its dense upright rosette grows along bright forest margins.

How to care for Tradescantia spathacea ‘Sitara Gold’

Use bright, indirect light with some gentle sun. Low light stretches the compact rosettes. Abrupt hot exposure can scorch the yellow-green leaf surface.

Water when the upper layer feels dry and the pot feels lighter, then drain fully. Direct water to the potting mix because the overlapping leaf bases can retain moisture around the central growing point.

Growth is well suited to 15–24 °C. Prevent sustained drops below 10 °C. Use 50–60% as the normal humidity range, with mild air movement.

Use a well-drained mix and a broad pot that gives shoots from the base room without surrounding them with excess wet compost. Separate offsets only after they have developed their own roots.

Keep away from cold draughts and feed lightly during active growth. As older stems lengthen, rosette tops can be cut and rooted to renew a compact plant.

Repot into a slightly larger pot when roots fill the container and need more room. If the mix drains more slowly, replace it; if the plant is unstable, use a broader, stable pot without increasing size unless the roots are crowded.

When Tradescantia spathacea ‘Sitara Gold’ is unhappy

Tall, open rosettes

Insufficient light stretches the stem and spaces the leaves. Increase light gradually and re-root the compact top if the old stem is already bare.

Rot between leaf bases

Water trapped in the rosette or a saturated pot can soften the stem. Remove damaged leaves, improve drainage and irrigate the root zone.

Brown edges on pale leaves

Check for abrupt strong sun, dry air and salt build-up. Pale variegation marks before green tissue.

Scale or mealybugs

Inspect the tight leaf bases and underside. Isolate and repeat control because the rosette protects hidden insects.

Golden leaves become dull green

Move toward stronger filtered light and remove any solid-green offset that begins to dominate. Extra fertiliser will not restore the golden colour and may weaken the plant.

Tradescantia spathacea ‘Sitara Gold’ can irritate skin and the mouth

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs that may chew it.
• Its sap and leaves can irritate sensitive skin, the mouth and the digestive tract.
• Exposure may cause red or itchy skin, mouth irritation, drooling or an upset stomach. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional if symptoms develop or persist.

How did Tradescantia spathacea get its name?

Tradescantia commemorates the father and son John Tradescant. Spathacea means spathe-like and refers to the boat-shaped bracts around the flowers.

Carl Linnaeus established the genus Tradescantia in 1753 in Species Plantarum, page 288; Heinrich Bernard Ruppius had proposed the name.

Olof Swartz first described Tradescantia spathacea in 1788 in Prodromus Vegetationis Indiae Occidentalis, page 57.
