Trachycarpus ‘Frosty’: Species and Cultivar Background

The species behind ‘Frosty’, Trachycarpus fortunei, originates in south-central China and extends towards northern Myanmar. It is a mountain and forest-edge palm with a long history of planting and fibre use.

Trachycarpus fortunei ‘Frosty’ is a seed-raised line derived from selected mother plants and raised or hardened under northern European conditions. Because it consists of seedlings rather than one clone, individual plants vary, including in winter performance. Like the species, these palms can naturalise in mild, moist European forest.

Care for palms in containers

Feeding: Retain green fronds and remove only those that have died completely. Use a complete palm feed with trace elements in spring and early summer, avoiding late soft growth. Do not cut the trunk or central spear to control size, because its single growing point does not regenerate. Move a potted plant only one size larger while preserving its roots. Seed is the normal propagation method, but the resulting palms vary and will not form uniform copies of the cultivar.

Temperature: Keep Trachycarpus fortunei ‘Frosty’ outdoors in strong light, from open partial shade to sun after acclimatisation. Plan its winter protection as for ordinary windmill palm, without assuming the cultivar can tolerate lower temperatures.

Temperature and watering: Although the palm is cold-tolerant, roots in a container need shelter from hard freezing and prolonged winter wet.

Roots and substrate: Plant into deep, well-drained loam and water generously during warm active growth once the upper soil begins drying. A pot can lose moisture quickly in summer yet remain dangerously wet in winter. Reduce irrigation as temperatures fall, protect the root zone from repeated freeze-thaw cycles and keep the crown from holding water before hard frost.

When Trachycarpus ‘Frosty’ Is Struggling

A container-grown Trachycarpus fortunei ‘Frosty’ remains vulnerable to combined cold and wet conditions. A loose centre spear, unpleasant smell or soft crown needs protection from further rain and freezing weather. Remove only material that has already detached, then watch for firm new growth from the centre.

Frozen or dried-out roots can cause decline later in spring. Check below the surface and preserve every firm root. Mites, scale and nutrient problems should be acted on only when their signs are visible. Rows of holes in opening fans, sawdust in the crown or visible tunnels may come from a palm borer and need professional plant-health help.

A stable pale or blue-grey cast may belong to this selection and should not be scrubbed away. Seed-grown plants can differ in both colour and cold response. Judge damage from softness, smell, continuing spread and the condition of the roots or crown, not from colour alone.

Trachycarpus fortunei: name and meaning

Trachycarpus combines Greek trachys, meaning rough, with karpos, meaning fruit. The epithet fortunei honours Scottish plant collector Robert Fortune.

Hermann Wendland established the genus Trachycarpus in 1861 in Bulletin de la Société Botanique de France, volume 8, page 429.

William Jackson Hooker first described it as Chamaerops fortunei in 1860 in Botanical Magazine, volume 86, plate 5221. Hermann Wendland later placed it in Trachycarpus as Trachycarpus fortunei in 1861 in Bulletin de la Société Botanique de France, volume 8, page 429.
