Terrarium Soil Mix – planting medium for humid planted glass
Terrarium Soil Mix is made for enclosed and semi-enclosed terrariums where moisture stays in the system and the planting zone rarely dries the way a normal pot does.
It suits small roots, mossy surfaces and compact plants that rely on steady moisture contact rather than big air pockets.
Core details
Use it as the main planting layer above a drainage base in jars, bottles and planted glass where airflow is limited. In open-top containers, it can be mixed with more structure if you need a faster dry-down.
Construction & materials
- Layer it over drainage material and a barrier layer, then plant and water once to settle the mix.
- Keep the surface lightly damp, not flooded; in closed glass, a little goes a long way.
- If condensation is heavy for days, air the container briefly and check drainage depth.
Worth noting
This mix supports a stable terrarium cycle, but it cannot compensate for standing water, unsuitable plants or constant direct sun overheating the jar.
Practical use
This mix is built around structure first. Use it as a complete potting mix, or blend it into a base soil to adjust airflow and drying speed.
Watering should match the pot size and root mass. Check moisture at depth and adjust your routine after the first few cycles.
Practical note
- Moisten dry components before potting so the mix settles evenly.
- Choose pot size for the root ball, not for the top growth.
- Top-dress with the same mix to reduce surface compaction.
