Stromanthe thalia 'Stripestar'

Warm rainforests of eastern and southern Brazil

‘Stripestar’ is a cultivated selection of Stromanthe thalia. The species is native from Bahia to Paraná in eastern and southern Brazil, where it grows as a rhizomatous herb in wet tropical forest.

The understorey is warm, humid and protected from strong midday sun, with regular moisture in loose, oxygenated soil. Spreading rhizomes send up closely spaced shoots beneath the canopy. Indoors, give the plant filtered light, steady warmth, high humidity and a loose mix that stays evenly moist.

Soft light preserves the leaf surface

Place in bright, indirect light or light shade. Direct midday sun can bleach patterned foliage and leave dry patches. Very low light produces weaker, more widely spaced growth.

Even moisture with free drainage

Water when the upper layer has just begun to dry. Keep the root zone lightly moist in a loose mix that holds air. Empty the cover pot after watering because a permanently wet root base is vulnerable to rot.

A moisture-holding, airy mix

Use a fine, loose houseplant mix with bark, perlite or pumice. The goal is steady moisture without compaction. A pot with drainage is essential.

Warmth and humid air

Protect the plant from cold glass, draughts and abrupt temperature changes. Humid air reduces brown edges. Gentle airflow helps the leaves dry after watering. Feed weakly as new leaves unfold.

Crisp brown edges on the striped leaves

Dry heated air, uneven moisture or accumulated salts can damage the thin margins. Stabilise watering, raise humidity around the plant and flush the mix with plain water.

Patterned areas look pale or scorched

Direct midday sun can bleach the cream markings and leave dry patches. Move the plant back from the glass into bright filtered light.

Lower leaves yellow above wet compost

The roots may be losing air in dense or saturated mix. Empty the cover pot, check for soft dark roots and repot in a looser medium if decline continues.

Fine speckling on the leaf undersides

Spider mites readily settle on warm, dry foliage. Isolate the plant, clean both leaf surfaces and repeat a suitable treatment.

New leaves stay tightly rolled

Check for a dry root ball, low humidity or pests around the new growth. Correct the moisture problem and inspect the rolled leaf before adding extra fertiliser.

About the name Stromanthe thalia

Stromanthe joins Greek stroma, meaning bed or spreading layer, with anthos, flower. The epithet thalia recalls the genus Thalia, which Linnaeus named for the German physician and botanist Johannes Thal.

Otto Wilhelm Sonder established the genus Stromanthe in 1849 in Neue Allgemeine Deutsche Garten- und Blumenzeitung, volume 5, page 225.

José Mariano da Conceição Vellozo first described it as Heliconia thalia in 1829 in Flora Fluminensis, volume 3, 106, plate 21. João Marcelo Alvarenga Braga later placed it in Stromanthe as Stromanthe thalia in 1995 in Eugeniana, volume 21, page 23.
