Strobilanthes alternata 'Snow White' is a low, spreading foliage plant with small puckered leaves marked in green, cream-white and soft pink tones. Its fine stems creep, trail and fill the pot edge, forming a dense textured mat when the plant is kept warm and trimmed regularly.
The plant stays close to the pot surface and reacts quickly to changes around the root zone. It needs steady warmth, bright indirect light and a moisture-retentive but draining substrate, because the fine roots and soft stems can suffer from cold, drought and stagnant wet soil.
Strobilanthes alternata belongs to Acanthaceae, and 'Snow White' grows as a compact foliage cultivar with low, spreading stems. In indoor pots, stems extend from the centre, produce close leaf pairs and can be pinched back to keep the plant fuller.
Because the growth is soft and low, the plant can dry out faster than heavier-leaved tropical plants. Constantly saturated substrate can damage the fine roots, especially around the stem base. A light, aerated mix with even moisture keeps the root zone open while the creeping stems continue to fill the pot.
Strobilanthes alternata 'Snow White' is generally treated as non-toxic and pet-friendly. Keep it away from pets that regularly bite houseplants, as chewing can still irritate the mouth or stomach.
Strobilanthes belongs to the Acanthaceae family. The genus name comes from Greek roots referring to cone-like flower structures in the group, while alternata refers to an alternating arrangement.
